Did anyone hear this assclown this morning? He was basically bragging about trying to start some mess in the clubhouse between Oswalt and Lidge after last Sunday's victory over the Mets. Ortiz said that after the game, Lidge was talking to the bullpen guys asking them if they thought the media would report that the bullpen saved the day. Ortiz then went over to Oswalt and said loud enough for Lidge to hear that the closer was saying this and didn't Oswalt think that the headline should be "bullpen finally does their job". That's some bull**** right there, IMO. Just another jackhole from the Chronicle to ignore.
I heard the interview and thought exactly the same thing. He sounded like some kid trying to start some tension in a high school cafeteria. For someone who makes a living with words, he seemed extremely inarticulate. He sounded worse than most of the amateur callers who make it through to the show.
I couldn't agree more. I got in the car about halfway through the segment. The only reason I thought he may be someone other than a generic caller was obviously because he said he was in the clubhouse at Shea. I guess there's a reason he writes rather than talks for a living. If 610 is going to continue making fun of slow people, this guy should be on the list.
You think that's bad. I blew $$$ on Ortiz's book "Armed and Dangerous" a few months ago. While there are some interesting insider anecdotes, it's one of the most poorly written books I've ever read. he constanly jumps around chronologically, talking about September for 3 pages, then June for 2, then last September for 2. It's very amateurish, and there's a reason he's a columnist, not an author. (i.e. his writing breaks down after about 4 paragraphs.)
I didn't hear the call but it sounds like he is just venting about the frustrations facing all Astros fans this season. One of those, "Can you believe that?" moments. Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge and Ortiz are not 8th graders. Oritz did not overhear Lidge talking **** and was not running to Roy to give him a "he said/she said." Do you really think that Roy is going to make problems because Brad said that?
could not agree more. HUGELY disappointing. not only is it poorly written, but he has no flair for storytelling. there's a story there; it begins the night of the oswalt, et al, no hitter and ends in the WS, but he can't seem to stay on target; it reads like a blog written by an outsider.
You not hearing the call was made completely obvious by this: That was the exact story. Do I think Roy would make problems? No. Doesn't mean that Ortiz wasn't trying to start it. Ortiz sounded very much like an 8th grader.
I agree that was pretty childish by Jose however he did have interestisting comments regarding the bullpen, trade talks, ect...
Ortiz is the worst writer in America -- should be covering the Tour de France. I recall his personal crap with Biggio. He's so Bush League.
Ortiz did not come off sounding quite like the a-hole some people are making him out to be. Ortiz said that while he was talking with Oswalt, he overheard Lidge complaining about the press and how the headlines always report the bullpen blowing leads, but never focusing on when the bullpen does its job well. Ortiz said Roy was mostly ignoring it and trying to rise above it all. Ortiz said he was ignoring it as well until Lidge continued to get louder. Finally, Ortiz asked Roy at a loud enough volume for Lidge to hear, "Roy, do you think the headline ought to be 'The bullpen finally does its job'?" I honestly thought Ortiz was right on. How Lidge thinks he can complain about all of the criticism he has received is beyond me. It's no wonder that the Astros are looking to trade the guy - his mouth seems to be awefully close to killing the chemistry in that clubhouse.
when has lidge ever said anything else that would make you think he's killing chemistry? he took crap all offseason and never once complained or ran from it. EDIT: bwarren -- good luck with the new law practice!
This is a great point. Regardless of recent performance, Lidge seems to be a great guy. He shows up to every interview with reporters asking him why he sucks, and never leaves until the last question is answered. As a person, he's great to have on the team.
Well he didn't complain or mouth off to the press that is. The clubhouse sounds like a different story though. For a guy who hasn't done crap this season he shouldn't be opening his mouth at all.
That's one person's anecdote. I am highly doubtful that Brad Lidge was doing anything but showing disdain for the Chronicle.
because of this one story??? we haven't heard anything before from these guys who cover the clubhouse about brad lidge being a bad guy...or a guy that mouths off...in fact, what we have is richard justice saying he hopes lidge doesn't get traded because he likes him so much. then this one story comes out, and we must have just been missing out on the truth this whole time??? color me unconvinced.
