How much do they make? A friend of mine told me that they are given the papaers for free and they get to keep what they sell them for. Is that true?
Yeah, homeless guys can go get a stack of papers and sell them on the side of the road. Better than begging, I guess. Get a T-shirt too.
I think if the Chonicle does that that is awesome. I would imagine the guys feel a lot better about themselves then just asking for change.
Well my objective would be to sell as much as I could. The window of opportunity is small (time period when people typically would be a morning newspaper), and people aren't exactly falling all over themselves to buy newspapers from homeless people.
My wife says there is a guy near the galleira on her way to work that wears a chronicle polo and wears nicer pants. Sadly she says he wears the same pants everyday. But in my mind it is great he takes his job seriously and works hard at it.
The Chronicle does it to get the circulation up as much as possible. Then they can charge more for ad space.
I guess my question is it Legal? Wouldn't that be considered loitering? If I started my own publication in whatever it might be can I go the local sidewalk and start selling it?
When I would buy the newspaper on a daily basis (back in my young sportswhore days), I would pass by the same guy every day, buy the same paper from him, and if I had any to spare, give him like 5 bucks for the sunday paper. Normally made some small talk for a few minutes while at the light, then drove off until the next day. I know it's not much, but he seemed to appreciate it. Once, I pulled up and forgot my change at home. He gave me the paper anyway since I normally give him extra every day. The next day I think was sunday, and I gave him 10 bucks, (normally gave him 5 ones, I slipped a 5 in there so he wouldn't turn me down). He thanked me the next day. Then he stopped selling there and after a while, I stopped reading the paper. ...I'm horrible at story telling, I always have such abrupt endings.
Well, I'm not sure about the legality of it or not, but I'd rather have a homeless guy selling papers on the corner rather than asking for free handouts for sure. I think its enabling and encouraging for them to have a job and I'm sure any law enforcement officer would much rather have a guy selling the Chronicle rather than harassing people for change.
F*CK*NG panhandlers and most people just asking for a buck should do at least THIS... sell the paper... you don't have to ask for money... I made myself a sign (just like they have one) that says: "I don't have spare change, GET A JOB, you BUM" and flash it when they flash ME theirs. It's not a whole day. It's frmo the wee hours of the morning (6 or 7 a.m.) until about 10 a.m. Miguel... I don't get the Tombstone joke, man... please explain...
Oh yea...well everytime I have to send something in the mail, I mail five bucks out at random to some lucky winner I pick out of the phone book. It's part of my "support the nation" campaign. You were pretty good about helping that guy out.
My name is not Miguel, it's Kam, but I will tell the story for you to understand. Pretend that FC USA is way back in the standings, and that FC Mexico is way up there sitting pretty in the standings. And the USA Today publishes a picture of Majestic Bald Eagle with the Stars and Stripes on a tombstone. Then we win 30 straight games by 5 goals, and nothing but shutouts, and we climb all the way back so we make the playoffs, and we see FC Mexico. And then Roy Oswaldo, and Roger Clemente, and Andy Pedro, and Lance Bayerga, and Morgan Esparanza, and Willy Taveras, and Orlando Palmiero, and JOSE VIZCAINO, and Craig Barbosa, and Adam Escalante, and Brad "Luces Hacia fuera" Lidge, beat the crap out of FC Mexico to go to the championship game. You know any teams that did that recently in this fair city we call Houston, Texas?
It's all about the advertising revenue. You think the Chronicle supports itself by selling papers for .50 a day? Magazines do the same thing sometimes over the internet. They put up a temporary "free" subscription offer, where you just put in your name and address and they start sending you the magazine. All the money is in advertising.
Yeah thats the way they do it. I got to know the guy on the corner of El Dorado and Highway 3 because he would come into Subway every Sunday morning and we'd trade him a sub for the paper.
