if you combine aol and roadrunner does that mean you have to use aol to surf the web?

or do you log onto aol when you want aol, otherwise your always connected to the internet and can use firefox/explorer to surf

    thanks

Depends on if you are billed by AOL or Time Warner.

1 If you have AOL for broadband (via Roadrunner), you must start AOL in order to connect to the internet. This option is now completely stupid.

2 If you have Roadrunner and add on AOL for free, you don't need to start AOL for your internet connection.

People who are on option 1 above should switch to option 2 immediately. Your connection will be much more reliable and your speed with increase at least 5-fold. Unless your are long married to an AOL email address, I suggest you have nothing to do at all with AOL.

Your AOL email turns into an AIM email account after you cancel. AIM accounts are free.

The door's open. You just have to walk out.

    Well, I've got Roadrunner Premium.

    Free is good.

This is exactly what I wanted to determine when calling, but I couldn't get the AOL guy to say (admit?) this. When he told me AOL would be free with Roadrunner, I accepted.

I just got Comcast 6Mbps (stuck in hell hole Dallas), and it's pretty decent. I also only pay 19.99 for 6 months, but I always call and tell them I'm going to DSL, and they give me the current special (usually either 19.99 or 29.99) They have an 8 Mbps option for $10 bucks more, which I may consider in the future. Here is my latest result:

    Last Result:
Download Speed: 6074 kbps (759.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 355 kbps (44.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Comcast Cable Internet is faster than Time Warner? Of course I am closer to the testing server, maybe that's affecting my speed.

BTW, does Houston has Verizon FiOS? That's probably the best option for RAW speed at home that's affordable. 15Mbps downstream for only 49.99 a month  Clearly I would have chosen that, but most apartments are not wired for that yet, as in the one I just moved into.

Yeah, if you're getting AOL free, it's news to me. Congrats on screwing AOL over. :p

It should be 9.99 for the AOL add on

If you have AOL for broadband, call THEM not Time Warner. Say you are tired of AOL connectivity problems and just want Roadrunner directly because of better reliability and speeds. Mention you heard AOL was free with Roadrunner starting last week. This is something AOL can offer you, not Time Warner.

Perhaps you should add a little disgust to your voice when you call AOL. I repeat, this must initiate with them, not Time Warner. The AOL guy will call Time Warner for you and create a 3 way conversation.

This thread got me thinking - so I called up AOL and for just 10 bucks more they freaking doubled my connection speed up to 56k.

    AOL to Launch
    Portal for Videos
    Amid Overhaul
    By MATTHEW KARNITSCHNIG
    July 31, 2006

AOL, in its latest attempt to resurrect its online fortunes, said it would start an Internet video portal featuring user-generated content as well as programming from a number of cable networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon and A&E.

The unit of Time Warner Inc. said it will begin a test version of the site, which will include 45 video-on-demand "channels," later this week. The site will offer both free and paid content. It will also include a video search feature, which will link users to video offerings from other sites.

AOL's video offering, initially planned for last spring, is the latest entrant in a race among Web companies, including Microsoft Corp.'s MSN, Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. and newcomer YouTube Inc. to establish dominance in Internet video delivery. A number of traditional broadcast and cable networks, including ABC, CBS and Viacom Inc.'s MTV Networks, have also started placing some of their video content on the Internet.

AOL's announcement comes as Time Warner prepares to unveil a radical plan to open access to nearly all of AOL's services for free. The company is expected to provide details of the strategy shift on Wednesday after it reports second-quarter earnings. [MY COMMENT: Apparently this actually started two weeks ago without a public announcement]

AOL, which had 18.6 million paying subscribers at the end of March, has been losing members at a quickening pace as users abandon the closed confines of its once-dominant dial-up service for high-speed Internet access.

In an effort to draw more nonsubscribers and boost advertising revenue, AOL has taken a number of steps to enhance the free offerings on its main site, aol.com.

Company executives regard video as a cornerstone of this strategy and in March started a site featuring free reruns of vintage television programs, including "Chico and the Man" and "Wonder Woman."

Called In2TV, the service drew about 1.8 million unique visitors in April, its first full month of operation, according to AOL.

I never start threads. Well, almost never, but wish I had about the T/W modem upgrade when I found out about it, because a lot of people here use their service. Better late than never, I guess! :)
