We've got approx 3.5 million left of our MLE. You can easily split it up and give them a starting salary of a few hundred thousand up to over a million. I suspect that the Rox will give them slightly more than minimum money to make it worth their while. 700k-800k would be my guess, unless they've got enough leverage to get more.
I thought a teams draft pick could be signed without having to use the exception. I thought the reason Rox had to use the exception for Kill Bill and JL3 was because they were essentially free agents.
Yes they can if the player accepts it. But they can also be offered MLE money if the team wants to give them more money and/or a longer contract. In this case it looks like we took the money targeted for James and split it up on our 3 rookies which is totally legal.
Nice to hear. Lets hope he can knock down those threes in the regular season and show the NBA what a steal he was!
I was kinda hoping they would not have needed to use the exception on the Rookies, but in the end I think the likes of Kill Bill, JL3, and Novak will produce more for the Rox than a Marcus Banks would. I dont think the Rox are done making moves for the offseason, but they have succeded in adding youth and decent quality depth to the team. If nothing else, at least the Rookies and Snyder will most likely give really good effort out on the floor since they still have to prove themselves.
Nice to see another young player who can put the ball in the basket...let's hope he develops enough strength and quickness to compete enough on D to get some minutes.
Yao/Mutumbo Battier/Howard/Hayes T-Mac/Novak/Bowen (IR) Snyder/Head Alston/V-Span/Sura (IR) Two more spots left. One should go to JL3. Need one more person on IR.
Finally! Now he just needs to work on his defense this summer. But in the chron, the contract is two years,no mention the third year. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/4072355.html
Isn't this old news? I mean, Fox 26 reported 2 weeks ago that they were all but done on the contract for Novak and that Lucas' deal would be done by the end of that week. I'm sorry, i don't want to come off like a party pooper. It's nice to hear, but is it really new news at all? C'mon team, let's get to them trades!
Does it make a difference in calculating the team's total salary in regards with the lux tax whether the Rox sign them using part of MLE or minimum salary?
I don't think so. I've combed through the Cba Faq by Larry Coon a bit: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#16 And it looks like it would only matter in terms of pure numbers. Like if they sign for 700K instead of 500K, it would obviously cost more since they gave them more money. The only exception appears to be for veterans who have been in the league longer than 2 years playing under the minimum. In that case the league only counts the salary of a 2 year veteran towards the cap and LT. This is to give teams a reason to sign veterans over cheaper younger players. So to answer your question in a nutshell, no.
If they are splitting the remaining piece of the MLE between Lucas and Novak I like it. How does everyone complain that we aren't future minded and then also complain when we spend pennies to ensure that we can retain our youg players if they develop?
No inside info or anything. Just a hunch. I'll bet Novak is involved in a trade real soon. I watch the guy and I see a great shooter who can't do much else. Don't see him fitting the current system. I would be surprised if he makes it to training camp. But what do I know right?
If they were going to trade him, they wouldn't have signed him. If he was unsigned, they could have traded his rights, no problem. But now that he's signed, they have to wait 30 days to deal him. I know you just said it was a hunch, but I have a hard time believing it will happen.
