Gooden is taller, quicker, better defender and alot younger. Shot is not quite as good but its still solid.
duuddee. awesome thread. Why would we give up so much for Battier to be on the bench? If you want a line-up with quickness, this would be your starting line-up(one that I favor): PG:Alston SG:Snyder SF:Tmac PF:Battier C:Yao but if you would rather have size, which is also nice, you start: PG:Alston SG:Tmac SF:Battier PF:Jho C:Yao but I think the first line-up will be our line-up. Tmac can no longer play the 2 like he use too, and Tmac wants and likes to play at the 3. Of course Battier cant play the 2, so he will be our 4, and Snyder is a good slasher, and if he can get a jumpshot, we're a strong team. That's the "best possible lineup".
He's a MUCH better rebounder and finisher around the basket. I mean, in those two areas, which are very much lacking for the Rockets other than Yao, Gooden is far ahead of Juwan.
I'll just give what I think the Rockets starting line up will be. Point Guard - Bob Sura Shooting Guard - Kirk Snyder Small Forward - Tracy McGrady Power Forward - Shane Battier Center - Yao Ming
But we dont really need someone who finishes around thr basket. When Yao is on the floor we need a 4 with shooting ability. When he isnt, we could use a Gooden but then again, Synder and TMac can slash to the basket. Its a matter of the price!
Sura did better on the fast break but Rafer was able to get the ball down to Yao in the low post better than him and James. All three of them had their limitations as PG's but James and Sura were much better scorers and Rafer isn't an ideal passer by any means.
Seattle was also a great scoring team. But Hayes is better than him any way for cheap. Hayes actually has a better rebounding rate and he was potential.
Should this go to Random Trade thread? This lineup is not possible unless we do two random trades that are not likely to happen.
That's bologna. Howards eFG% from jumperland is 43%. Gooden's eFg% is 42.1%. Gooden is just as effective as Howard with the jumper. But when you look at the rest of the numbers, there is NO comparison. Gooden blows Juwan out of the water in overall FG% and eFG%. And the rebounding and shot blocking numbers are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Gooden is much more than a young Howard because Howard has never been very good. You are way overblowing the effectiveness of Howard's jump shot. It ain't all that. It's just the bag of chips. If all else fails, we should pursue a S&T deal with Cleveland, offering to take Damon Jones' contract off their hands with Gooden in exchange for Howard and Head.
I hate Juwan's jumper. Not because the actual jumpshot is bad (it's good), but because that's ALL Juwan does on offense. A high percentage jumpshot is still less efficient than shots in the paint, or other methods of scoring. Other big men will post up, dunk the ball, get put backs, or crash the offensive boards. Juwan doesn't give you any of those.
I would just like to point out that Howard is not quite the big bag of nothing that a lot of us like to make him out. He has been able to score his entire career. His averages when Yao went down were prettey good. Keep in mind he was the only scorer the Rockets had left on the team when Yao went down and he still hit 46% of his shots. 20ppg 7rpg 46% field goal attempts. I agree that I would love to have Gooden on the team. I think he gives us very similar to what Howard does except in a younger more athletic body. The plus to Gooden is also his rebounding. The negitive about Gooden is that there is a reason that someone as talented as him has been on 3 different teams and has only averaged 30 minutes a game one season in his career. I think he lacks proffesionalism and maturity that Howard has. Having said that, I would really like to see if JVG could have a positive effect on his career and teach the guy to play some defense. If he could somehow manage to play 30+ minutes a game I could easily see him averaging 15pts and 10 rebounds.
Where did you get these numbers? Which games are you counting? I just looked over Juwan's game-by-game stats, and he did not average 20 ppg without Yao. And if this is just for a handful of games, it doesn't mean much.
Maybe you should look again: Yao last game was against GS. Howard was the teams only scoring threat in the remaining 6 games. 22 pts against the Kings 25 pts against the Jazz 15 pts against the Timberwolves 16pts against the Grizzlies 31pts against the Nuggets 8pts against the Spurs That is 19.5 ppg if it bothers you to round up 1/2 a point to 20.
