Is "The Ref" obscure. It's a hilarious movie with Denis Leary, and Kevin Spacey, about a burglar that takes a bickering couple hostage, on Christmas night. Very funny and twisted, despite a few sappy subplots.
I don't know if these have been brought up. Dazed and Confused Directed by Richard Linklater and set in rural Texas and with Mathew McConaughy's greatest performance, or at least most memorable. "The thing about high school girls is I keep getting older and they stay the same." Slacker also by Richard Linklater and set in Austin. A tribute to life around UT.
You just named 3 movies that were a staple of my childhood. Once Bitten I figured was pretty well known nowadays because of Carey, but I thought me and my family were the only people on earth that ever watched Three O'Clock High or Just One Of The Guys... And one time when my sister was sitting at one of the computers in our office here at home, got up to go get something to drink, and when she came back she discovered a post-it note I had left on the screen for her. It read... I don't think I've ever seen her laugh harder in her life
A recent one that flew under the radar AFAIK is The Matador, it is a dark comedy about a hitman who is losing it and a man he meets at a chance encounter in Mexico. Boiler Room w/ Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel and Ben Affleck always gets mentioned in these types of threads. Kung Pow Enter the Fist is side splittingly funny if you're into low brow Adam Sandler type comedy.
Speaking of Linklater. "Before Sunrise", and "Before Sunset" are excellent. If you've ever thought about what an idealized encounter with a girl in a foreign country would be like, look no further. Before Sunrise was the original, and Before Sunset continues the story later.
I LOVED that movie. From now on, the only person who gets to yell is me. Why? Because I have a gun. People with guns get to do whatever they want. Married people without guns - for instance - you - DO NOT get to yell. Why? NO GUNS! No guns, no yelling. See? Simple little equation. Have you ever seen Who's The Man with Leary, Dr. Dre, and Ed Lover? That was another great comedy that's not very well known...
Ridicule - French movie came out in '96 or '97. It's like Dangerous Liason's or Valmont but in my opinion better. Paris,Texas,Blood Simple and Blue Velvet just for the creepy quotient. The Ruling Class with Peter O'Toole. Came out in the early 70's. Really strange and off the wall performance by O'Toole who thinks he's Christ. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner - British movie that came out in the 50's or early 60's. Very anti-authoritarian and bleak. The Harder They Come - Jamaican movie with Jimmy Cliff. Jinxed - Bette Midler,Rip Torn and Ken Wahl.....funny movie. My favorite Paxton movie is "A Simple Plan" with Billy Bob and Bridget Fonda. I think that was Thornton at his best. The scene were he and Paxton are talking about how their father really died is so strange in how you see them finally bond as brothers.
It was a bit more for me since I'm persian and the main characters were of that decent so it was cool to see how they interacted and made them out to be.
Battleground, 1949, covers a platoon during the Battle of the Bulge. Written by Robert Pirosh (who won an Oscar for his efforts) and directed by William A. Wellman, it is one of the most realistic small-action WWII films you'll ever see. Very overlooked, with a terrific cast. Don't let the goofy poster fool you. The Coca-Cola Kid, 1985, is one of my favorite flicks. Worth watching just for the nude scenes of Grita Scacchi in the shower (awesome!), and with Eric Roberts. Directed by Dusan Makavejev, this film was made in Australia, and has a great soundtrack that never lets you forget you're "down under." Very sweet, funny, more than a bit crazy, and sexy as hell. Anyone who hasn't seen this should knock back a bottle of vino (or a Coke!) with the significant other, sit back, and enjoy.
No, but what a cast. Dr. Dre AND Ed Lover. Is that the words, "Tour de Force" I hear off in the distance?
If you liked Requiem, I'd highly recommend "Jesus' Son" with Billy Crudup. It's filled with interesting visuals and some references to the bible. Quality flick...
