Andy Pettitte to give up baseball???

Andy was great last year, but this year and his first were mediocre at best...I suspect he will retire with Roger as he won't be able to command the salary Roger does...

 

It seems like he's not into it anymore. I guess losing isn't very fun.

His July ERA is 2.88. Seems like he's still into it to me.

 

Andy had a bad first half, buy I expect him to be better the last part of the season and the playoffs (if they can make it).

He's a lefty, innings-eater, with good stuff. Despite the rough year, some team would pay him a bunch of money to pitch.

I have a pro athelete retirement theory. I think these guys get paid a ton of money over their career, but they also live the lifestyle that goes along with it. I think a lot of these guys spend a big percentage of their income supporting that lifestyle. So when it comes to a choice about retirement...I think they think "I've made a ton or money and still have a bunch of money, but one last payday would keep my family set forever."

I think that is why you see some guys end up in another city for one more year with a overpaid contract. Emmitt Smith, Hekeem, ect. That one last payday just to cover the money they've blown over the last 10 years.

Not to mention highly skilled, highly competitive people have a hard time hanging it up.

But a lot of times it comes down to: "I've made $25 million in my career. I have $15 million in the bank." This last $5 million paycheck will cover my past spending stupidity and I'll retire with around $20 million.

 

He just doesn't seem happy to me.
