How do you get the smell of smoke out of your car? I let my friend smoke 5-6 cigs and now it still smells 2 days later. I've left the windows and doors open all day that has helped some. I've heard numerous theories, like 1. Ionizer 2. Vinegar 3. Baking Soda 4. Lemons 5. Charcoal 6. Coffee Any help would be appreciated.
Buy a bag of apples. Cut up few and place them in the floorboard. Replace with new, cut up apples after a day or 2. You should notice the smell going away after each time. After a couple of times, it should be gone. I've used this to get rid of smoke in a smoker's car after I've bought it.
I'm sure that there will be plenty of good, usable advice posted, but why not just ask your 'friend' clean his own stink up?
When I worked at Enterprise, we had a machine we would put in the smoke cars for about an hour that would get rid of it. The machine is pretty expensive, but I'll bet a lot of car detail places have them.
For future reference, if you're going to let people smoke in your car, make sure you turn the a/c off beforehand. We've been smoking in my wife's Accord since she got it and people can't even tell when they get in the car for the first time.
For god's sake, don't use vinegar. I recently had an issue with smell in my car. When it flooded here in Houston not long ago, my car flooded out and I got a decent amount of water in my car. It's dry now, but the moldy smell persists. My wife suggested vinegar and water. Well, now my car smells like vinegar and mold. Not a good combination. Would the apple thing work for mold/vinegar smell too?
I'm not sure. The idea is that the apple pieces absorb odors, not mask odors so you won't have an apple smell either. Theoritically, it should work, but I can only vouch for smoke. But I will add that if the smell is too bad, it will get rid of 95% of it, but not all of it.
When I got my first car at 16 it reeked of smoke. My dad and I detailed the interior ourselves...I mean scrubbed and shampood every last inch. We even shampood the cloth seats, and dried them with blow dryers. Just avoid getting them too soaked with water. After that, we let the car air out for 2 or 3 days and the smell was hardly there. After a while it went away all together.
Here's what I did so far Yesterday I vacuumed the car and sprayed it with cherry flavored Misty Fragrance, which did nothing but add some cherry smell. Then I left the doors and windows open all day. Today I am somewhat of a mad scientist. I put charcoal, apple slices, a cup of vinegar, coffee grounds, baking soda and dryer sheets in the car. Also I sprayed Fabreeze. Let's see what happens. I'm thinking of taking the vinegar out though it's very strong.
here is my ******* post "take dump in the center console, then your car won't smell like smoke anymore? And my nice post Take it to a detailer and spend the cash to get it cleaned well. Simple Green is another cleaner to try.
A quick fix to cover the smell -- burn several incense sticks in the car with the windows rolled up. I prefer sandlewood.
