Looking for a nice place to eat in Austin. Trying to stay away from the franchises and trying to stay away from Mexican. What is good on a Friday night for a group of 20 somethings?

lol...Austin's nice restaurants leave a lot to be desired. You can likely wear sandals wherever you go, though, so that's kinda nice.

Maybe Z-Tejas if you can wait out the line and find a place to park

You can't go wrong with Moonshine Grill. I'd also recommend Castle Hill Cafe or its sister restaurant, Mirabelle.

Some good high dollar places for steak and seafood:
    Truluck's
    Sullivan's
    Eddie V's
    Ray's

For a more laid back atmosphere try:
    Z-Tejas
    County Line
    The Salt Lick (Driftwood)

there's 2 Z-Tejas. The arboretum one is nice and your parking would be easier.

Lets not forget taking people like bigtexx to the salt lick so they can experience great bbq and byob, something bigtexx couldnt do in the middle east. ;)

Fonda San Miguel and Mars are two excellent places in Austin to have a nice dinner with some cool atmosphere.

    Especially Fonda

The Driskell Grill is pretty good. Wink and Jeffrey's are always well recommended.

Moonshine was a good previous recommendation. Not quite so pricey.

Fonda is mexican. Trullucks is a chain IIRC.

why would someone not want mexican? No intiendo.

I had Moonshine for lunch today. The pork tenderloin was good. Mars is also good. Mesa Ranch is pretty good too. Called a "Texas Grill". Whatever that means.

I agree with other posters. Eliminating mexican food in Austin is a mistake.

    Some guidelines would help...esp $$$.

    Anyway... http://www.frommers.com/destinations/austin/0003020003.html

I like the Driskill a lot but it isn't cheap. Cool atmosphere and good location.
