"it might in theory be possible to bring the species back from extinction by inserting the Neanderthal genome into a human egg and having volunteers bear Neanderthal infants...but there would be daunting ethical problems in bringing a Neanderthal child into the world again."

    Understatement of the year.

Reconstructing the genome is a great and useful project, but let's leave it at that.

If there's a neanderthal baby popping out somewhere, then CD better be on the phone to his scouts. We need a bruising PF.

would it be afforded the same rights the rest of us would?

how would you define a "normal life" for this child when it's born into a world that already made it extinct?

what is the goal? so we can know more??? how do our goals conflict with the reality that this is a real life we're talking about, not merely a science experiment?

they are as smart as we are and try to eat our brains?
I mean it probably won't happen but you never really know.

Besides, what happens when you have 400lb Neanderthal linebackers in the NFL?

A longstanding dispute among archaeologists is whether the modern humans who first entered Europe 45,000 years ago, ultimately from Africa, interbred with the Neanderthals or forced them into extinction.

    I think...interbred.

If I remember correctly neanderthalis had the bone ridge on the top of their head for connecting the jaw muscles which prevented their brains from growing larger. This a.) limited the size of their brainpan and b.) the stronger jaw muscles indicated they were much closer to pure carnivores and therefore would have exhibited carnivore like behavior.

In sum they would be dumb as dirt and mean as hell. I think we already have enough people like that in the world. No need to produce more.
