It's $19.02 right now and still falling, down almost 14% from yesterday. My ESPP shares have turned into dogsh*t, but I'll ride this one out till the end. I'll be holding onto these shares for at least a few more years. Free fallin baby! There's a lot of pissed off people around here this morning.
Computer companies have a shelf life of about a decade, after that it's abandon ship. Dell was top dog from about 98-03. But like all the other companies the quality and service drops dramatically once they grow too big. But maybe I'm just bitter because the laptop I bought from them last year is in its 3rd harddrive, 3rd heatsink, 2nd motherboard, and 2nd videocard.
Could this mean a drop in prices for dell comps??? I am going to college in a month so this could be good.
A bigger effect on Dell prices would be the release of those Pentium chips. That will still take some time for the price to adjust in the marketplace. But if you're looking for a good deal on a Dell, just check out techbargains.com. They usually have a great deal on a desktop or laptop every week or so.
Dell has not grown at all, they have not embraced the hand held market....... They are stagnated.... DD
IMO the entire PC market is facing a change: the price of PC is bound to drop below $100 in the near future and companies will have to live with a much lower margin. PC's will become the new cell phones -- you sell them for cheap and you try to convince people to replace them every other year or so.
they put out a great product in the axim but they just never took it to the next level. I mean i've had my X50v for a year now but not many other PDA devices can really touch it. HP is pretty pricey and now Dell has withdrawn their hand from the handheld field all together.
The Axim is only a PDA, they needed to do what Gizmondo was going to do, and do a hand held that is a PDA/GPS/SatNav/Digital Camera/video conference unit/MP3 player/cell phone/Wi-fi phone/movie player etc.... That is something everyone would buy. DD
Too much in one . I do use my axim for mobile internet, mp3 player, skype, streaming music and movies. It takes a few other things but it works. May not be as all in one as the gizmondo was supposed to be though but it can be done. I've completely rid myself o my laptop because i use my pda now. It's still big but not as big as having a latitude hanging from your hip
Even if they did push a product like that, it wont take Dell back up. Their main product still remains the computer and with decreasing margins on computers, things aren't looking good. I dont see them doing what Apple did and basically market their iPod as their main product. A product like that IMO wouldnt really sell that well. I just dont see people buying a unit that does all that because no one really needs something that can do all that. It would be fine for all the tech nerds out there but eh thats about where it stops. It's just becoming harder and harder for Dell to keep up with their strategy and be a very low cost and low price provider
As a $60 billion company, it's been really hard for us to grow the last couple of years. The market's certainly not growing fast, and the strategy's been flawed in many ways: - Open up the weekly flyers and ads, and you'll see the $299 system highlighted as the main attraction, instead of the high-end gaming system. - Arrogantly refusing to offer AMD Opteron based servers, and instead being held hostage to Intel's roadmap. - Losing brand recognition. Selling too many cheap products, causing Dell's name to be associated more with Wal-Mart than Target. - People don't see Dell's as a "cool" product, wheras Apple is much more hip. The iPod retails for about $100 more than what the Dell DJ did, but it was successful because it was a cool, hip toy, and that's what the market wants.
well its nearly 4 points off 52 week highs, but the point is well taken. i remember the day before when the rumors were around that herd was leaving NCR for HPQ. it was my best day ever. i got short NCR when the news came out and it freaking crashed.
also dell specifically noted that people were very unhappy with their customer service. and lets not forget the increased competition from HPQ.
We had an HP outing today downtown for the notebooks team. Suffice to say, no one shed a tear over Dell's announcement when the director made mention of it during his presentation. I'm really torn on Dell. I want it to succeed because my family has a lot of Dell stock (and knows the family well). On the other hand, I'd love to see them knocked down a peg, because Dell has really abused McCombs School of Business like a red-headed stepchild lately with their shady hiring practices and the like. (Hey, just because we're a feeder school in Austin doesn't mean Dell should hire graduates for less money than other schools and change job positions at the last second for poor, unassuming interns.) Plus, there's that whole "I'm working for HP this summer" angle. Regarding HP, we're all having a grand ole time at the office. We're kicking ass and taking names. King Kong ain't got nothing on us.
Good stuff man. HP's doing really well these days and has closed the gap. Yesterday at the 9G Server launch party, Michael Dell didn't even hint at the Q2 results and he was all smiles. Strange, huh? So, I've got exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes left at this job. Then I turn in my badge and head out the door, and get set for b-school at McCombs. It's been a nice run the past 4 years. Anyways, Dell's questionable MBA intern hiring practices have already been well documented. Back in 2001 when there were layoffs, they rescinded dozens of internship offers only weeks before the summer, leaving no time for MBA students to find another job. Dell is banned from hiring at MIT since that incident, and it definitely left a bad taste at other top schools as well. Also, with regards to salary, Dell offers less because so many people turn down more money to stay in town! BTW, Vescey, McCombs Think and Drink tonight at 9P at 219 West. Too bad you're in Houston. We'll probably run into each other once school starts up again.
Got any Dell horror stories, baqui? Seems like everyone is getting out of the company. Exactly. But what about the McCombs people who want to work for Dell (i.e. big computer company) and don't care about the location? They're getting screwed. I just think it's shady and bad for business when people with equal or greater talent get hired for less just because the company can get away with it. Take care of your employees, damnit. Yep, I'm sure we will. I don't get back until the end of August, though. Have fun with your week-and-a-half long orientation (mine is a day ). David Gee (your orientation co-leader) is an awesome guy. Sue isn't so bad, either.
