Bobcats sign Big O, putting him behind Okafur and May. I would take this as a sign that they will not resign or match Ely, though they may look to S&T him. If anyone has info indicating that this is wrong, please correct me. We still look pretty soggy at the 4 (Howard, Hayes, Novak/Battier), and while Gooden and Wilcox are looking for contracts that far surpass would we could accomodate, Ely could possibly be had on the cheap. Thoughts? Evan
yah ely might work, the only thing is if we do a S&Tthe only thing we really have to offer is caproom and the bobcats have enough of that. I'm not too sure if he can be had for what is left on the MLE (around 3.9 starting salary)
its always depressing when you look at castoffs from one of the worst teams in the league as positives on your own roster still.... we need a pf/c and Ely could give us everything that we lost with swift
DD, I don't get why you're so obsessed with surrounding Yao and T-Mac with a bunch of one-dimensional shooters(Referring to Cook...And if we're going to swing a deal in which we lose Head, I'd at least want someone more versatile than Mihm). Well, I mean, I get it, but I don't like it...Do you really want to be one of those teams that lives and dies by the three? Put Novak, Alston, and whichever one-dimensional four that we get on the floor together, and we may start the game in the penalty! We were lucky to have Hakeem Olajuwon, who could just be surrounded by a bunch of shooters and make it work. Yao and T-Mac aren't there yet, and probably never will be. Frankly, no one in today's league could carry a team Hakeem-style. Even Tim Duncan has a pretty talented, well-balanced team around him, and he couldn't get out of the second round this year.
What are his skills? Is he a good post defender? Does he play good team defense? Does he have a post-game? His numbers show him to be a weak rebounder, and only an average shot-blocker for a PF/C.
I was just looking at his numbers, too. I recall being interested in the guy months ago, but don't remember why. Did he have a monster game against us, or something? Looking at the #'s, they're decidedly average. Can someone sell us on him?
Actually, the Bobcats have better depth at the PF position than almost any team in the league. Okafur is one of the very few true double-double players in the league. Sean May was injured last year, but it looks like he will be one of the best backup PFs in the league this season. Othella is quality depth. Melvin Ely is a former lottery pick would has played well for Charlotte the past two seasons. I don't think Ely is a "castoff". It is just clear that the Bobcats are overloaded with talent at PF, despite their lack of depth elsewhere.
This would be a great move IMO, gives us 10/5 at the PF, 6' 10" bluecollar enforcer/rebounder like we need next to Yao at times. Definate upgrade over JH at this point, especially if we can unload his contract somehow in a SnT (maybe with Head?!?). For all those worried about him being a castoff from a bad team, would you guys have rather signed Othella?!? Also, in an extreme case, see Ben Wallace... Give me Korver with our $4.2 M TE and WE ARE SET!!! Yao/Deke Ely/Novak/Hayes Battier/Korver/Novak/Bowen T-Mac/Snyder/Head Alston/V-Span/JL3 or Yao/Deke Battier/Ely/Novak/Hayes T-Mac/Novak/Bowen Snyder/Korver/Head Alston/V-Span/JL3
Ely would be a great signing. Is he restricted or unrestricted? He could also be the backup center because Deke sucks now.
You want Kover for 4.2M TE and then use his as backup to Snyder? I am not sure if that is a wise move?
Speaking of the Bobcats, dont they have to "add" salary to their team to make the minimum salary requirement? I know they dont want to add a lot of years or BIG salaries to preserve room for next offseason, but I think they have to add some salary this year.
What about the Blazers Brian Skinner. Portland does have a log jam at power forward and i believe that he can be had for the trade exception and a little something else. Skinner is a hardworking role player who would be a good backup for Howard. Brian Skinner is definitely a Jeff Van Gundy type of player..... http://www.nba.com/playerfile/brian_skinner/ http://hoopshype.com/players/brian_skinner.htm
There are plenty of good backups in the NBA that make $4M per year and well upwards, the point is to not have a considerable/dramatic dropoff from starters to bench, see 2005-2006 Rockets.
