DeBush was a 6'6" banger with a seriously sweet stroke from the outside. An early hybrid, ultimate winner.

    Tough, great team player. Moneyballer.

It was a sad day when that man passed.

i see your point BaMcMing. so then getting a guy like brian cook is a move you'd be supportive of? i think we need an intense player at the PF position, albeit one with a decent skills set (unlike our own motor-man, Ryan Bowen)

The days of a Charles Oakley type will NEVER be over in the NBA, period. There just aren't any players with that skill set is why you see these other types right now. There are no bangers with a good jump shot. Every team in the league, save for about 5, would be lined up around the corner to get a 24 year old Charles Oakley to start for them right now.

Lee Nailon...I think he's out of the league.

Jeff Foster 29 yrs old (pacers)
    .552 FG% overall
Before I even look it up, my memory recalls that this guy is all hustle, 7' tall, from Houston or Austin or something, but cannot shoot. Let's see if I'm right.
    .148 2pt jumpers
.599 inside game (decent .540 on post shots that aren't dunks and tips)
    37.7 Rebound Rating
    2.2 Block Rating
His numbers are very comparable to Chuck Hayes. He's a horrific jump shooter (Hayes is bad, but okay at 35% jump shooting), but he has the heart of Hayes in a 7foot frame. I hope that if Hayes is given more minutes this season, then he can continue to produce at his trend and become Jeff Foster with a decent shot.

Keith Van Horn 30 yrs old(mavs)
    .424 FG% overall
    .368 3pt
    .341 2pt jumpers
.563 inside (but mostly dunks and tips bring that up, he has a .490% post game without the dunks and tips)
    18.8 Rebound Rating
    1.2 Block Rating
So KVH can block shots better than JHo (but anyone can do that). KVH's only real strenght is his 37% 3pt shooting clip. If Jho is the benchmark for an "average rebounder", than KVH is slightly below average. His jumpshot is terrible too. KVH falls into the category of one of those players who can dunk and hit 3's, but can't shoot any better than Stromile Swift from in between. Seems kind of weird, because he doesn't fit the sharpshooter white guy stereotype, but the stats show his suckiness.

Nenad Kristac would be good, but he's another guy who's young and considered a part of NJ's future.

Look, I'm not sure if this search is going to get a definite starter at PF. And with the money left of the MLE after possibly signing V-Span, and the TE money and what pieces the ROckets have to trade...they're not going to find a perfect player. Rasheed Wallace, even Antonio McDyess....there is just no way that will happen.

So whoever they get is going to be Flawed. Too young, too dumb, can't rebound, can't D up, can't shoot...one of those things will be applicable. I believe Chuch Hayes is ready for a break out year. He's great, but there's still room for a jumpshooting PF to thrive.

Again, Joe Smith would be perfect. I know he's not too unattainable, considering Milwaukee's rotation, but his contract is so good for them.

Brian Cook is a very good possibility. The stats show he rebounds worse than Stromile (yikes). Whether he just doesn't "get it" defensively or on the boards, or maybe he's young...that'll be seen in the future. But it's because of his flaws that make him attainable. If Brian Cook was well rounded, his value would be too high. Look, this guy is an absolute marksman. 49% jumpshooter and 43% 3pt shooter! 6'10" 240....Starter material, probably not...weapon off the bench, absolutely.

Ideally, if the Rockets can put in a rotation of Joe Smith and Chuck Hayes at PF, I'd be happy, but Hayes and Cook isn't so bad either.

I disagree. I see Phoenix as the ONLY team that does this as a starting or majority portions of the game. Phoenix doesn't talk for the rest of the NBA. At stretches, teams put thier small ball lineup in, however it's very rare to see them play that as their usual rotational spots. Infact, it's only in use against the Suns & Mavericks usually.

I do agree that the 4's need to space the floor. However the perfect 4 of this generation is one who can:

    Shoot with range(at about 17')
    Defend with some physicality
    Rebound consistently

To say the Charles Oakleys are done with and the Dave DeBushers are wrong. You can't tell me that Dave and Charles, cannot do the things mentioned above, infact they excel at such portions of the game. They have the tough instincts, however thier offensive game was very finesse. On defense and rebounding, they were tenacious. That's the perfect 4-man.

Oakley and DeBusher were no "bangers", watch their tape--they were jump shooters-- on defense and rebounding they were physical.

    Troy Murphy
    363/838 overall fg =.433
    58/181 3pters for =.320
    171/285 inside for =.601
    134/372 2pt jumpers=.360
    Rebound Rating 30.1
    Block Rating 1.2

I have no idea how good or bad Murphy's defense is. It's not like Golden State has been known as a defensive force. The stats show he is a strong rebounder, but not really a great jump shooter. He would be an upgrade in some ways over Juwon, but a 32% 3pt clip and a 36% 2pt jumper ain't that good. I think Murphy does have a legit post game though, from what I remember.

    Drew Gooden.
I'm intrigued. He's restricted though, so Cleveland can match any offer right? Some say he's as bad as Stromile when it comes to rotations and knowing plays.
But I ask, what if Stromile was able to hit a consitent Jumper light Juwan, and rebound like a monster? I think Stro would still be a Rocket.

    Drew Gooden
    .421 jump shooter
.588 inside (.511 without dunks and tips)
    32.4 Rebound Rating
    4.9 Block Rating

Gooden has always been on the block because Cleveland has wanted better, but the fact is, anyone who is better than Gooden is pretty much unattainable, that is why for all his ADD type flaws, Gooden has been given quality playing time.

I think the Stro comparison is not fully accurate. Gooden is a monster on the boards and can hit a jumper. Even if he's as bad as Stro is on D rotations, Gooden's rebounding and shooting make him valuable...not star valuable, but possibly too valuable for the Rockets to be able to acquiring him with the lack of funds and or trade assets that they have.

You do realize that Smith and Cook's games are as different as JVG is from Rudy, don't you?

Oh definitely. And I'd prefer the former...didn't mean to make the comparison as much as saying that a Hayes/Cook PF rotation wouldn't be so bad.

Again, Smith/Hayes is my number 1 choice (other than the impossible Garnett/Hayes or Wallace/Hayes).

There is one similarity though between Smith and Cook. They both hit jumpers better than Chuck Hayes.

IMHO the Rox, with Yao, need an outside shooting, weak side D - type 4, like a Raef (ouch, his contract) or a Murph (ouch, his contract). Smith is a fair utilitarian 4 but not the fit I (strongly) believe this roster requires.

I was in the Songalia camp tho I believe Wiz overpaid. I would pay (with Alexander's $$$) for Murphy. I hope Novak's game is (JVG and) NBA worthy, or will at least evolve such.

I like Raef, and though he's not fleet of foot, I'd be inclined to try him as starter next to Yao. The 39% 3pters and 46% 2pt jumpers is very strong. And though his contract is giant, it is pretty much Juwon plus Alston and is over in 3yrs like Juwon.

Murphy, while he can shoot, he doesn't shoot well enough. His 36% 2pt jumper rate is far inferior to a Juwon Howard or Joe Smith or Antonio McDyess (all at 43% jumper). Murphy rebounds better then all of them, and actually has a solid post game. He can create his own post shot and would be a solid alternative scoring option to Yao in the post.

His 3pt % took a drop last year at 32% after a 40% career high 2 years ago. But if you look at his numbers, he's not as much of a 3pt specialish (like Raef) as much as it's something in his arsenal that he can show. If he was a better shooter than I'd be sold, but taking the shooting and his 5 year 10+million a year deal he has...I don't know.

He is not a great post defender, but his size gives him an edge over Juwan in that dept. Murphy did peak at 39% for 3pt shooting in the last before last, it depends on the threes he wa taking. If open i think he'll knock em down, all moot though, no way of getting him.

Just to reiterate the point--Dave DeBusschere had a nice jump shot. Not great, but really good.

Bangers aren't obsolete, Stro was just a bust.
