I have recently been reintroduced to this show on the sleuth network and I must say this has to be one of the alltime great police shows. The acting is great ,Frank Pemberton is an alltime character. i hate to say it but this show puts Law and 0rder to shame (I love all L&O franchises) Just wondering what anyone else thought about this show.

I love the show and can tell you from personal experience that it does a great job of capturing the very quirky flavor/local culture of Baltimore. I also like the Law and Order series quite a bit, but they're pretty conventional police procedurals. Homicide is in a league of its own. I'm glad you created this thread, it reminded me that I've been meaning to start rewatching the series through NetFlix.
I lived in B-MORE for a couple of years and it is amazing how much strikes home when I watch. The Wire is another show that captures the flavor of the city really well. The funny thing is I hated Baltimore when i lived there but watching Homicide has made me miss it especially the whole 4 different seasons thing.
i don't know if it puts law and order to shame, different dyanmic. more of a nypd blue show, where it delves more into the lives of the cops. I have also been watching the re runs. good stuff. I think this show did have a higher peak than law and order. It just couldn't sustain like law and order. the creator is also responsible for "the wire" on hbo, another show for the baltimore chamber of commerce. the guy is a baltimore native.
When I first moved to Baltimore from Austin for school and work, I did not like it at all. I left for a couple of years and then came back with a new appreciation for Baltimore and the entire region. I really like having the 4 seasons, as you mentioned. There's also a rich geographic diversity in the area- Mountains to the west, within striking distance of the Atlantic coast to the East. And the regional economy has been in good shape for awhile now. That said, Baltimore-the city, still has some serious issues- high crime/poverty/drug abuse and the pretty awful school system that usually goes along with cities that have these problems.
I thought there might be a connection between these shows he wire does seem to be a latter day Homicide. I am trying to understand the episode arcs what season is currently being shown it seems like they skipped a season or started out of sequence.
I always tell people the city of Baltimore is so different from its 2 neighbors ( DC, Philly) its like they are 10 years behind, when I moved there also after school in 93 they were still wearing jordache jeans and gerri curls. I went to Morgan State Graduate school.
andre braugher, pembleton, was the title character in "Thief" which justed ended a short season on FX. pembleton was one of the all-time great TV characters, and the first 3 seasons were amazing. it ws never quite the same after the stroke- i loved yaphet koto too.
the first thing I saw him in was "Glory" with denzel, great movie, great cast, with morgan freeman, and matthew broderick. did he have a stroke in real life, I remeber the one on the show
those crabcakes they're always eating makes me want to visit. baltimore used to be one of this nation's largest cities and ports.
Very underrated show. I never watched it in 'first run' but was introduced to it by my wife later on. Loved the show. Imagine that, a "dialog" driven police show. I mean the "case" was always secondary. It was about the people. Very refreshing. Not only that, but instead of using the TIRED old locations of LA/NY/Miami they used Baltimore. refreshing! And Andre Braugher is just awesome on that show. He just commands the screen!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Simon David Simon isn't actually the creator like I wrote earlier, his book inspired the series but he is the creator of "the wire". he's a d.c. native rather than baltimore, but worked for the baltimore sun as police reporter. also responsible for the hbo program "the corner" before the wire which is more about the drug addicts.
You owe it to yourself to check out The Wire if you liked Homicide. It's just as brilliant (maybe even better), but for some reason doesn't get enough publicity. Very gritty, lots of depth, great characters, great story.
