    ESPN Insider

The Washington Wizards signed free agent forward Darius Songaila to a five-year, $23 million dollar deal, Songaila's agent, Mark Bartlestein, told ESPN.com.

Songaila's deal includes a player option for the fifth year of the contract.

Songaila is a skilled four man with a sweet outside shot and the ability to go inside and bang. The move means that it's now very likely that the Wizards' first-round pick, Olexsiy Pecherov, will return to Europe for another season, a source close to the Wizards confirmed to ESPN.com

The moves use the up the majority of the Wizards' mid-level exception, with Songaila's deal taking up around $4 million of Washington's $5.135 million mid-level exception.

So do the Wizards have Jeffries' bird rights, or does this mean they're letting him go?

Jeffries is a restricted free agent, so the Wizards can match any offer for him, including a full MLE deal.

Fortunately, the Songaila contract does push the Wizards closer to the luxury tax threshhold (capologists, any idea on just HOW close?). This could mean that the Wiz would consider a sign-and-trade for Jeffries or (better yet) let him leave via free agency. The most likely scenario, though, is that Jeffries simply takes Washington's qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent next year.

Just wondering out loud if Washington would be interested in moving Jarvis Hayes (6-7 SG) to get away from luxury tax land. The Rockets' TPE plus a pick might do the trick.

Yeah thanks ... didn't realize Jeffries was restricted. Just did the math, they're about $4 million under the luxury tax threshold (including Jeffries' qualifying offer). This signing brings their payroll to roughly $61 million. I'm surprised it's that high - they are paying Antawn Jamison a TON of money!

We already got Snyder. Hayes is a huge question mark with injuries the last couple of years...I wouldn't really want him considering we already have a semi-project in Snyder

Jefferies could be like our Boris Diaw with lesser passing but better defense.

Strange move by the Wiz, another smallish PF that doesn't really have a consistant way to score baskets. This move really makes the frontcourt crowded, I'd imagine this means they're going to try and trade someone, probaly Etan Thomas.

Doesn't have a consistent way of scoring baskets?

Unless you meant to say that he is not great at creating shots for himself, methinks his sweet jump shot is one of the best in the NBA among big men. It is reliable and consistent.

GR-eat pickup for the Wiz. Darius had an assist ratio of 15.8 just two years ago, and he's the perfect high post passer for the Princeton. I mentioned that they should go after him in an article I wrote last summer. If EJ gives him the ball, he'll flourish.

    Darius Songaila signs with Wizards

I thought the Rockets might have some interest in this guy at the 4....

Report: Wizards Add Power in Songaila
Ivan Carter of THE WASHINGTON POST reports, "The Washington Wizards haven't been major players in free agency so far this summer, but the team did fill a need yesterday by agreeing to terms on a five-year contract worth around $21 million with forward Darius Songaila, according to team and league sources."

    What a pity.

i think it is only a OK trade, since what wiz need is a more dominent post player.

That's exactly what I meant. Don't get me wrong, hes a good "floater" as a PF who will wait around the perimeter for a driver to kick it to him, but the Wiz have a bit of that in both Butler and Jamison(especially since Jamison had alot of trouble getting his own shot against Cleveland) Even though there really wasn't any post scorers in FA I thought Washington would look for someone who could do a bit more work down low.
