I was in Newport, RI this weekend for a break from the hot cement of NYC. While walking along this path called the Cliff Walk, we came across a resturant overlooking the surf and decided to get a couple of cocktails and a bite to eat. When I opened their menu, I noticed that the bottom of the menu had the "NOT JUST A BURGER BURGER" - claiming to be #3 on the Top 20 Burgers You Should Eat Before You Die http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_4196 Without consulting this list (which I hadnt read until last night when I got home), I've had #14, #6, #3, and #2, and to be honest, I think that Christian's U-Totem is better than #14 and #6. However, I have to admit, I shelled out the $25 and had the #3 burger on Saturday and it freaking ROCKED. Has anyone had any of these burgers? #3 This burger doesn’t taste like a burger. It’s more in the North Carolina pulled-pork family, even though it’s all Kobe beef. (Kobe beef has a lot of the qualities of pork—it’s soft and sweet.) Chef Richard Hamilton, who has big-time talent, makes the best high-concept burger in America. His roll, which is a bit towering, worried me at first, but it flattened beautifully and didn’t get in the way. The burger, which consists of barbecued Kobe brisket surrounded by chopped Kobe beef, is topped with enormously complex but not overpowering coleslaw and sits on a tomato-onion jam that’s sort of a cross between ketchup and barbecue sauce. The twelve-ounce creation isn’t so much a juicy burger as a mouthwatering, heart-stopping, wildly rich chopped-beef sandwich every bit as satisfying as the best sandwich you’ve ever eaten down south. It’s a burger breakthrough, and the accompanying garlic-basil-Parmesan potato chips are awe-inspiring.
I haven't been to any on the list, but the best burgers I've ever tasted come from Michael Burger in Galveston.
How is brisket and chopped beef a burger. Stupid Yankees. Any such list without Tookies and with a bunch of hotel restaurants is a farce. This was funny though: The menu read: “All steaks & hamburgers cooked to order,” and I had this conversation with my waiter: ME: Medium-rare, please. HIM: All our burgers are well-done. ME: The menu says they’re cooked to order. HIM: That means we don’t start cooking until you order it.
Where does White Castle rank on that list? I made a quick trip to the midwest for a family reunion and made a White Castle run Saturday evening. Nothing like 'em.

The best burgers I've ever had are: 1) this little steakhouse in Mammoth, CA (little mountain/resort town)...angus burger...perfect 2)In-N-Out
This isn't so much about burgers, but about barbecue. There's this little bit on NPR where people talk about things they believe in. You'll have John McCain talking about service, that kind of thing. Anyway this one guy sends in a recording of how the thing he believes in is barbecue. It's dynamite. Better than JG Mellon, I'll say that. Its overrated as far as the wait goes (I think Coppersmiths in Hells Kitchen makes an equally good burger, I eat there pretty much every Wed, beer and a burger for $8 is pretty solid for NYC standards), but the beers are really cheap and the atmosphere is cool....plus they cook everything in bacon grease (!!!!) which makes it yummy. Plus lots of hotties seem to show up at Corner Bistro.....I'm a big fan of Christians Totem in Houston but the walk in crowd there is nothing compared to the Corner Bistro. Unless you're into the chainsmoking fatties look. Then Washington and I-10 is your kinda heaven. These Fudruckers comments are sacrilege.
I'll give you that. Personally, I love Corner Bistro. The burgers remind me of what Chili's used to be when they pressed their burgers (way back when). New Yorkers love Corner Bistro, too, because Time Out has an award category called "Best Burger (not from Corner Bistro)". I tried Pappa's Burgers the other day. Meh. I like Beck's Prime better.
