Recently, I added some memory to my laptop (had 256MB RAM and added a 512MB to it). I couldn't be happier with the result...except for one thing... For whatever reason beyond my comprehension, now when I try to restart or shut down the system, all I get is the blue screen with the Windows XP logo in the middle, which used to say something like "saving settings..." and then "shutting down", except that now it says nothing below the XP logo and it just stops working...doesn't freeze or anything, but nothing happens, the system doesn't shut down or "save settings" or anything like that, the same screen just stays there and the computer doesn't do anything, which forces me to manually force it to shut down. Anyone has any idea what this might be? It frustrates me more than anything else really, and I am worried I might damage/corrupt my system if I keep manually powering it off like that. Appreciate any advice I can get...
clock speed= front side bus speed x a multiplier on the processor Memory doesn't care what your clock speed is, it only runs as fast as your front side bus. It's possible that your front side bus runs faster than the memory is rated for. I would guess this is not the case unless the ram you bought is old. More likely it's unhappy having two memory chips of different manufacture/size. Some memory controllers are more sensitive than others. It's also possible you just got a bad stick of ram. I'm not an expert, but the first thing I would do is yank the old 256 stick out and see how it does with just the new 512 piece.
With either one installed without the other, the computer loads/shuts down just fine without any problems. So I guess I can't use both memory sticks together, which I can't understand. Here are the specs for both memory sticks: 1) Brand - Hynix PC2700S-25330 256MB DDR 333MHz CL2.5 2) Brand - Aeneon PC2700S-2533-1 512MB DDR 333 CL2.5 From what I can tell, both seem to have similar speeds and should be compatible with one another...am I wrong?
this is what I recommend as a first step in troubleshooting. IF it didnt do it before you upgraded, then I think it obvious first thing to look at. lpbman, in my experience changing clock and bus speeds is rarely accessable from the BIOS setup on laptops.
tiger does you laptop use dualchannel technology? check your laptop documentaion,,,it shoudl say somewhere. or check the manufacturer's website if it wants to set it in dualchannel mode....it needs for both sticks to be the same size.
I have dualchannel on my desktop and my motherboard has four slots. The manual says somthing like slot A+B must = C+D. So yes the sticks have to be the same size and the added memory must be in the right slot to make this formula true.
Yes. When I installed the two sticks at the same time it showed that I had 768MB of memory. I only have two slots in my laptop to use, so I can only have two installed at a time...
