Sheesh, first Phil Hendrie, now this. Oh well, I would argue that they were "done" after I heard their latest album. Still a sad day if true, though. =w= Frontman leaves door open, but doesn't sound upbeat on uniting Friday, July 14, 2006; Posted: 9:10 a.m. EDT (13:10 GMT) NEW YORK (AP) -- Rivers Cuomo says that, for now, Weezer is "done." Cuomo, the band's bespectacled songwriter and frontman, told MTV that while he remains in touch with his bandmates, "we've never mentioned getting together." "Really, for the moment, we are done," he said. "And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one." Weezer has released five albums since forming in 1993. The group took a considerable break between 1996's "Pinkerton" and 2001's self-titled disc (typically called "The Green Album"). The band's last release was "Make Believe," in 2005. The liner notes of that album led to conjecture that it was Weezer's last. They included a quote from a parting soliloquy in Shakespeare's "Tempest," the playwright's last play. Cuomo, 36, said he has been writing songs, but said, "I don't know what'll happen with these songs -- if anything. ... I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to see." Jim Merlis, a spokesman for Geffen said that the label had no official response, but did add Cuomo has made similar statements in the past. Cuomo recently graduated from Harvard and married his longtime girlfriend, Kyoko Ito. LINK
Now there's some irony for you. But yeah, it's probably for the best. They were just never the same after Matt Sharp left. I hear he and Rivers are talking again. Maybe they can start writing songs together again like the old days, when Weezer was actually good.
i agree. funny thing, the other week I was watching VH-1 the alternative and they played The Rentals "friends of P" matt sharp was a bigger influence musically and chemistry-wise than most think. i loved blue, pink, green. btw brian bells side project the space twins is pretty good...
They were the **** back in 94-96. Kind of lost interest when they went on a 5 year sabbatical. Bought all of their albums afterwards, but nothing compares to the first 2 albums. Nothing was ever the same after that. One of my favorites was: "Susanne" off the Mallrats soundtrack.
I love both of those tunes. A lot of their best songs were actually B-sides and imports. Waiting On You, Suzanne, Mykel and Carli, etc. It was fun trying to track them all down back in the day before file-sharing made it so easy.
Well that sucks. There's a lot of bands I like more than them, but I have all their CDs because they made a lot of good, catchy songs. In tribute to them, I'll post the lyrics to one of the coolest songs around. El Scorcho G**damn you half-Japanese girls do it to me every time oh, the redhead said you shred the cello And I'm jello, baby But you won't talk, won't look, won't think of me I'm the epitome of Public Enemy Why you wanna go and do me like that? Come down on the street and dance with me I'm a lot like you so please Hello, I'm here, I'm waiting I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me I asked you to go to the Green Day concert You said you never heard of them -How cool is that?- So I went to your room and read your diary: "watching Grunge leg-drop New-Jack through a press table..." and then my heart stopped: "listening to Cio-Cio San fall in love all over again." I'm a lot like you so please Hello, I'm here, I'm waiting I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me How stupid is it? I can't talk about it I gotta sing about it and make a record of my heart (How stupid is it? Won't you give me a minute Just come up to me and say hello to my heart) How stupid is it? For all I know you want me too and maybe you just don't know what to do or maybe you're scared to say: "I'm falling for you" I wish I could get my head out of the sand 'cuz I think we'd make a good team and you would keep my fingernails clean but that's just a stupid dream that I won't realize 'cuz I can't even look in your eyes without shakin', and I ain't fakin' I'll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon. I'm a lot like you so please Hello, I'm here, I'm waiting I think I'd be good for you and you'd be good for me
I would have died for weezer back in the day. But their musical evolution came off cheesy. The Beach Boys-ish Green was forgivable. The latest CDs have good songs, but are weak as a whole. They let me down. But I will live...
damn, i still dig them, even their new stuff nothing can compare to the blue/green albums but their new stuff i dugg to. I thought "Keep Fishin" was one of their underappreciated songs that I really loved along with the video. As mentioned "Suzanne" is probably the best song most people haven't heard (btw, that whole Mallrats soundtrack is good). "Beverly Hills" was annoying and overplayed to me, but "Perfect Situation" is of my favs from last year.
Speaking of Rivers Cuomo and (half) Japanese girls. Here's a story about him. My sister goes to Harvard, and Cuomo was going there two semesters ago or something. She never met or had any classes with him, but it was well know around campus. Well she told me that there was one time that her roomate told her that Cuomo was hanging out in the cafeteria with a bunch of girls around him at that very moment. And that she could have gone and seen him if she wanted. (She didn't end up going just because she said she would have felt funny about the whole thing) Well I made some comment about him being surrounded by harajuku girls since we happened to be talking about Gwen Stefani earlier. My sister was shocked and asked how I knew, because in fact pretty much all those hanger-ons were asian girls. Not much of a story. I found that image amusing, and thought I'd share.
The remaining members should bring in Weird AL Yankovic to be the new lead singer - they wouldn't miss a beat.
