No report about new injury. Most reports are reporting favorable progress.

It could be just sore legs after practice. The ice pack is to ease off the soreness, I think.

An interview of Yao Ming by Yang Yi on Basketball Pioneers dated July 6, in which Yao Ming talked extensively about Wang Zhizhi.

Yao Ming has yet to play together with Wang Zhizhi on the basketball court. Prior to the national team's return from Italy, Yao Ming spent two and a half hour everyday practicing his shots in a spacious court, ran an hour on the track and field lane, and another hour in the gymnasium. Perhaps yesterday was the last day for his personal training. He took this interview, and it was all about him and Wang Zhizhi.

Basketball Pioneers: Let us look back on several important meetings of you and Da Zhi. You were selected into the national team for the first time in 1998; at that time, Da Zhi was your idol. In 2002, you and Da Zhi met for the first time on the NBA court. And now, this reunion. As far as you're concerned, which one is of more significance ?

Yao Ming: At each phase of my career, each of those meetings then was important to me. But then, at different stage of my career, there were different feelings; the most current one should be of more significance. In 1998, that was then very important to me; I just entered the national team, and I could play alongside with Da Zhi (my idol). In 2002, that was then also very important to me as I arrived into NBA, and Da Zhi was there playing in NBA too. Now, at this present moment, again it is very important for me, as we can play together side by side (for our country). If I really have to choose, then I will say this time, it is not like any of the previous meetings. This is more significant.

Basketball Pioneers: Everybody now is discussing about the Yao Ming and Wang Zhizhi combination, but all those impressions belonged to 5 years ago. What is your definition of that Yao-Wang duo 5 years ago ?

Yao Ming: At that time, Da Zhi spearheaded in attack, and I anchored in defense. Offense was his responsibility, and I was responsible for defense, as simple as that.

Basketball Pioneers: The Yao-Wang duo just lasted for 2 years in 2000 and 2001. In your memory, which game you and Da Zhi played left the deepest impression ?

Yao Ming: Well, perhaps you had the answer with you already. I thought you gonna say it had to be the game with USA in the Universiade 2001 (in Beijing). In that game, I blocked a couple shots from the American. But let me tell you, that was not the best game I and Da Zhi played together. I remembered prior to the game with the USA team, we had several games that we were falling behind by more than 10 points; in particular, there was this match with Czechoslovakia; we were still behind by 10 points in the fourth quarter. It was Da Zhi that saved the day singlehandedly. I had only to focus on snatching my rebounds, and let Da Zhi made all the shots. Problem solved and we won.

Basketball Pioneers: In the past 5 years, was there a particular time that you felt you missed Da Zhi badly ?

Yao Ming: Well, not while I was playing on the court, as you could not divert your focus and attention while playing. But off court wise, yes. I missed Da Zhi most in 2002. We lost in the World Championship; we even lost in the Asian Games; But in 2003, we hosted the Asian Championship; we could win that without Da Zhi. And then in 2004 in Athens, I was already familiar with my own responsibility (to shoulder the national team on my own).

Basketball Pioneers: Now 5 years later. What do you think about the Yao-Wang duo ?

Yao Ming: I really don't know. There are still so many unknowns. Up till now, I do not even have the chance to practice together with Da Zhi.

Basketball Pioneers: Compare with 5 years ago, what will be the biggest difference in the Yao-Wang duo ?

Yao Ming: I read the news everyday. I knew Da Zhi scored alot of points in those tournaments in Italy; he was averaging 20+ points per game. I felt so elated for him. But I guess Da Zhi has to accept and adapt to a new role in the current combination, i.e. when I return to the national team, I am the axle of the national team in both offense and defense. Da Zhi was born to be a basketball star; Da Zhi was not used to be just on the supporting cast; he was molded for offense. But time has changed. Compared with 5 years ago, he has not changed a bit, but I am entirely a different player. Whether Da Zhi could accept and adapt to his new role, that would be the biggest difference.

Basketball Pioneers: To you, the sky is the limit in the future. So will you still be fond of those long gone years of CBA, the Shanghai Sharks vs Bayi Rockets championship series, the Yao Ming vs Wang Zhizhi duel ?

Yao Ming: Those belong to an era of the past. People need to be proactive and look forward. The bottomline is the fittest will survive.

Yao's ego is growing. His new-found confidence may be the biggest change after the All-Star game last season.

Yao Ming is changing into an arrogant b*stard but I love it. Keep changing. Like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. More towards Mr Hyde now.

I am not sure there are too much arrogance from Yao, instead if there is any, it is from Yang Yi. Look back anything he reported on Yao, it always looks like a totally different person that is talking... Frankly I think he is just trying to make a name for himself at the expense of Yao.

Just interpretations error. Sometimes u can't translate onething in chinese to english, instead only the approx meaning, which sometimes can be misleading

That's pretty good translation of the original article. Yao in that article does sound more 'confidence'.

I got same feeling about Yang Yi's writings but I don't want judge his motive. Some think it is because he is Yao's close friend, so Yao tends to tell him more. If that's true, a real friend probably want to keep those 'extra' between themselves.

mis-interpretations? Why cant Yao have any nuts ? Maybe yao did mean that!Hakeem didnt say much either in his younger days, but olajuwon would have elbowed you in the face or something. Keep it up yao!

So as the national team will be leaving Europe for another 12 days of exhibition matches, today (July 17) is an Open Day for the Media to see the national team on practice.

Yao Ming still could not play. He just sat by the courtside to watch his team mates play.

But he did take the time to continue his rehabilitation. He will stay in Beijing to continue his rehabilitation on his own until the national team returns end July.

He just simply towers over everybody. And is that a bike? How can a mere bike carry Yao Ming?!

Never underestimate Yao Ming's bike. Yao picked it up for good reasons.

I don't know how much the Rockets organization likes the idea of Yao riding a bike to go to practice. I heard the traffic in China is kinda crazy. Watch out for the drunk drivers, Yao.

Yeah, it's pretty hectic, but the bikes and the cars are in seperate lanes. I think htere are more bikes than cars in China. Lol, just imagine if a car hit Yao ming when he's on his bike, the car would be smashed into pieces, and Yao would walk away unhurt.
