Basically if you get traded, you get 15% of the contract value as a bonus .... that's in crude website guy terms. I'm sure one of our cap experts could explain it better.

Basically what Clutch said, but the problem is that it's hard to trade a guy with a kicker because the receiving team has to have the cap space or a trade exception to accept the bonus salary. That's why the team usually needs the guy to waive their kicker in order for a trade to go through.

It doesn't matter James used that as an excuse. He went to Minny so he can average the most stats. MVP my a$$

I would be surprised if you could waive something like that. It reminds me of how the players' union in baseball protested when there was talk about A-Rod tinkering with his contract and cutting his salary to help the Rangers trade him. In short, it didn't happen.

But the trade kicker is not that uncommon. Lamar Odom had one in the contract he signed with Miami. It was designed to discourage the Clippers from matching when he was a restricted free agent. But it didn't keep the Lakers from trading for him when they sent Shaq to the Heat. In fact, it might have even helped match salaries.

Since this is a reference to the Mike James situation, I don't know why it would be such a problem. If MJ would have been a success for the Rockets, we wouldn't trade him anyway. And if he was a bust, given the few years on the contract, wouldn't he be more valuable as an expiring contract in a potential trade?

That's different. Trade kickers in the NBA have a built in waive clause. Just like a no-trade clause in baseball can be waived by the player.

yeah because minnesota sucks, especially that garnett guy.

seriously rockets fans, the only thing worse than crying, is saying he went to minny for the money, instead of coming to a team that hasn't been out of the first round in 9 seasons.

He went to Minny because they gave him an extra year and the Rox wouldn't per his own words.

Nope, all three teams offerred him 4 years. Only Minny agreed to add 3rd year player option and trade kicker.

    Thank you.

Minnesotta has helped KG this offseason (lost nothing, added Foye & Mike James) a heck of a lot more than the Rockets have helped Yao and Tmac.

So far they have. But look at Minny with KG, Foye & Ricky Davis vs. the Rockets with Tracy, Yao & Battier. If Mike James joins one of those teams, which one would still have zero chance to contend for a championship? Minny, of course. Dallas has a decent chance even without him. Minny could even fail to make the playoffs with MJ.

It wasn't just about money and it certainly wasn't about what team(s) could contend for a championship. It was about control and about bitterness towards the Rockets. I have no problem with his decision. I wanted him only because the Rockets wanted him. MJ can go to Minny and average close to 20 pts on another weak team. It will be just like last year except they could at least approach a .500 record. Then he can play with a chip on his shoulder and continously run his mouth about how much he COULD HAVE helped the Rockets or Mavs if they respected him enough.
