I don't understand the negativity directed at Mike James. He's worked hard for years. He was great both with the Raptors and with the Rockets the year before. He was a contributor on a Rockets team that many of us enjoyed watching.

He had an opportunity to make the best choice for his career and for the financial security of his family and he decided to play with KG in Minnesota. No different than any of us making our career choices.

On court, Mike James will likely have the opportunity to play a bigger role than he does with the Rockets or the Mavericks. If the Wolves enjoy some success next season after a 2 year struggle, Mike will get his share of credit-- where as Dallas was already an NBA finals team, and all people will talk about are the two superstars in Houston-- Yao and TMac.

He's never done anything negative to any organization or any fan-- never commmited a crime, never dogged it on the court, in fact, he was a contributor to the 04-05 team. Why anyone is bothered by a man making a career choice is beyond me.

I personally think we should just congratutate him on finally getting paid a signficant contract and wish Mike James the best of luck with KG up in Minny.

PS-- As to Rockets management, I guess paying almost 7 million dollars to a 36 year old guard was too much for them. Let's see how they move on before we judge. The offseason is far from finished, and no free agent that Rockets had any serious interest in (aside from maybe Speedy Claxton) is off the board yet.

    Hell naw.
Tha biatch lied to us and played us for fools.

Talking all this crap about his love for Houston when he just wanted the money.

I hope Minnesota sucks next year and we rape em every game.

I rather see this happen than for them to take on yet another bad contract that would come to haunt them in the years ahead. Even though my faith in Rockets management disappeared a long time ago, this is a good thing. James was looking for the best deal FOR HIM and looks like he found it in Minny. Will that be enough to help them contend? Who knows? But, since this is a Rockets board, who cares?

Well he isn't exactly a saint -- he did hype everyone up about wanting to come back to Houston, and he has an ego that might actually be bigger than the Milky Way. I guess everyone discounted Minny as an option, but like you said, he gets to be a #2 scoring option (or maybe even #1, since KG isn't exactly your typical go-to guy on offense), and he gets mo' money. I'm not going to say "best wishes" because I'm not a fan of the guy's personality, but I'm not crying either. It wasn't a do-or-die situation like most people made it out to be.

    Good post, Gundier.

I was a little pissed at him because I felt he'd strung us along and maybe cost us the chance to seriously chase someone else, but I feel differently after reading Clutch's article. His quote there -- saying he wanted the extra year and trade kicker and only one team offered it -- seems totally fair to me. I expect he did want to come to Houston, that he wasn't lying about that, and that all things being equal he would have.

And frankly I'm not that disappointed. Having read, watched and listened to the recent interviews, I'm pretty well convinced dude needs to get his head checked. Crazy people are not especially rare in the NBA, but I'm personally gratified that Rockets management did not deign to offer one of them a deal that would hamper the team in future years.

There is nothing to show that he was lying about wanting to come back to Houston, but contract negotiations takes more than one party to make it happen. The deal just didn't come through, Minnesota had a more attractive bid for him. You just move on. It's a business decision for the parties, like when Rockets traded Mike James, Jim Jackson, Stro Swift, like when Mavs cut Finley and let Nash go, like when Minny decided to give Sam Cassell away.

    He was a Rocket player.
But Carroll and Cie prefer trade him.
Like Gay, a trade as we had a good player.
    Now, he can smile.
He should never had gone from Rockets.
    It's Rockets managements fault.

Now, go for Marcus Banks for example...

I have nothing but good wishes for Mike James.

He played his heart out for us and then we traded him to siberia on the first day of training camp.

And still he gave us a chance to get him back.

You cannot fault him for the Rockets front office and ownership being cheap and showing lack of belief in his abilities and worth.

I predict in 06-07 he will play just as well as last season, if not better.

I'm not going to congratulate the guy, but I'm not really upset.

I think he made a stupid decision. He basically chose an extra year of guaranteed money for a better chance at winning, which shows he's not all that concerned about winning right now. If he's that confident he'll still be good in four or five years why not sign a 3 year deal and try to get a raise after that?

Minnesota's not bad but you can't say they have a better shot at winning than Houston, and definitely not Dallas and Miami. Bottom line is we need guys that are hungry and play hard (like Battier), not guys who are still holding grudges about not being drafted and worried about being 'undervalued' rather than worried about winning.

I wouldn't be angry about it if he could keep his mouth shut. He's shown his ignorance once again today and I'm glad he's not going to be a Rocket. He's still bitter about being traded. He needs to get over it. Oh and T-Wolves still suck, so don't worry.

    Here's the real James story:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4040066.html

Read it and it will make sense from one side or the other. He doesn't seem like a horrible guy, but he does have disillusions about being able to stay in one place as a pro ball player.

I can't thread so this was the best spot or the link...

    It all comes together now...

First he started talking about how he loved Houston and wouldnt hold the fact that they tradd him to the Raptors against them.

Then the Mavs, Rockets, and Minny offer basically the same deal...

He goes to Vegas and comes back anger as ****!

Why? B/c the Rockets keep telling him how much they love him but don't want to offer him the trade kicker! He basically wanted a pernup (?) but the rockets wouldnt give in.

Agreed. He took the money, as we all would have, which resonates especially in his case because he's been relatively underpaid and clawed and scratched his way to this.

Congrats to MJ & all the best, except when he plays us.

Bottom Line. The Rockets shouldn't have traded him in the first place.

    Well said Van Gundier.

I also don't understand why posters are comparing him to Beltran. The only similarity is that he claimed that he wanted to come home. Past that, Boras and Beltran did way more damage to the Astros. James has done absolutely none to the Rockets.

Blame the stupid Rockets brass for trading him away, not MJ.

The hilarious thing is how the Rockets' management have been telling people for the past three seasons now about how Houston is a 'hot spot' for free agents and that everyone wants to come play here...what do we have to show for it? NOTHING!

Congrats MJ, couldn't be happier for him, wish him the best.

I am just happy he didn't go to dallas. Out of site out of mind to me when it comes to Minny. Mike James alone doesn't make T-Wolves a better team than the Rockets with a healthy T-Mac and Yao. Plus if the T-Wolves get off to a bad start, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they trade KG and start to rebuild.

Good luck to MJ and his career, but i dont see championships in his future.
