I think this is a solid plan B. Marcus Banks would make a solid backup PG with some offensive skill and Ariza brings length and good D to the 2 and 3 spots. Both are worth about 2.5M in this market IMO. Deshawn Stevenson would be an even better fit than Ariza but he would demand more than 1/2 the MLE. Maybe the 4.2M TE? All is not lost if we lose Mike James.
Agreed... I'd rather go this route than give James 5 years. If we could pull off all 3 via a SnT w/Toronto, it would be a proud day for CD. Not holding my breath though...
I might be secretly estatic if we missed on James and were able to land both Banks and Ariza for the same price, don't tell anyone but both these guys I feel could make solid contributions on a contendor.
Just a frame of reference w/ Boris Diaw: 2nd year in ATL, 2.6rpg, 4.8ppg, in 18.2 mpg 3rd year w/ Suns, 6.9rpg, 13.3ppg, in 35mpg
I actually wouldn't mind James walking and us getting Banks and Ariza. And it does look like Moneyball is in effect. Interesting Howard is one of the worst pf's. We need a 3rd center. Do we go with Haryasz, or do we ask Cato to sign the vet minimum? Or do we just bring in Badiane?
I somewhat agree. I think both would be solid contributors, but on a championship level, that I'm not certain. The thing about Mike James is that he is a legit 3rd scorer and he brings a dagger mentality to the court. I mean, on the court he's just one of those guys that wants to be the one to hammer in the last nail of your team's proverbial coffin. This Rockets team needs player like that. I think the Rockets should make a move to get Ariza regardless of whether they sign James or not. I think that Ariza gives our team some match-up flexibility at the pf when playing teams like Phoenix and Dallas. But adding both Banks and Ariza is a solid plan B.
Agree, also if you could add Cato on top of Banks and Ariza, that would be a huge offseason in my book.
Caution. Those figures are 2003-04 and 2004-05 with a weighting for 04-05. Rosenbaum has gone to work for the Cavs and has not produced 2005-06 numbers. To show you how much variability there is, Yao isn't even a Top 10 Center. Rosenbaum had him 66th overall with this methodology.
You would love to have Ariza on this team. He can be taught good D, has length, can drive, is athletic, not stupid, and doesnt want much money, on top of just being a basetball player. The Rockets need all of that.
Since it looks doubtful that MJ will take a deal with the TE, Ariza should be a good candidate for a sign and trade.
Let us not forget that Ariza is a restricted FA, which means that ORL can match any offer. It sounds like you'd have to overpay to get him.
