For some reason I couldn't sleep last night. It must have been fate because I got online and immediately saw the news. SUFJAN IS COMING TO AUSTIN! On my birthday no less. I can't wait, this is going to be a kickass show! Hopefully I can get tickets. Everyone and their mother is going to be there.
So, what's the story on Sufjan Stevens? What little I've heard I did not really like, yet on Amazon I've noticed many 'best of' lists where the author likes the same music I do other than Sufjan also being on their list.
Man, listen to Greetings From Michigan. As great as Illinoise is I think it's kind of overrated. Seven Swans is an incredible album, more of a spiritual feel on that one, which I enjoy...his earlier stuff takes a bit getting used to, but I've fallen in love with electronica this past year and "Enjoy Your Rabbit" is pretty fun to listen to, if you're into that kind of stuff. Sufjan's gotten wayyy trendy lately, which kind of sucks, but that doesn't take away from the fact that his live performances are way too rare and from all I hear, he's totally worth seeing. The thought of hearing "Chicago" live sounds AWESOME to me. Flyer--Sufjan's too popular to be indie now. jk...
I once listened to "Romulus" 10 times in a row. The acoustic version of "Chicago" is better than the original, imo.
This is one of those guys - like Damien Rice - that I want to like, but I just have no interest. He is clearly talented, but there's a hipness factor there I just do NOT have.
Tix went on sale yesterday and already they're all gone. I blinked! LOLZ, Sufjan could add 5 more shows this week and the tickets would be gone in 24 hours. Oh wellz...
Saw Damien Rice open for Fiona Apple this past Friday at the Backyard in Austin. It was a painful experience. I went in with an open mind and left really, really (I can't stress this enough) disappointed. You can only endure so many sappy love songs back to back to back (to eternity). As a songwriter I think it shows a lack of growth, maturity, creativity, etc. to show such an obvious inability to extend your lyrics beyond these narrow bounds. The songs are geared towards twenty/thirty something adults with a teenage "who's going to invite me to the next dance" sensibility. I expect these songs to come from teams of songwriters from Nashville and LA who produce canned songs for Top 40 artists, but not from somebody who has gotten such supposed songwriting cred as Rice.
