Daniel Shore on who he preferred to win the World Cup: "Oh, I don't care. They're both Old World so either one who wins is okay by me."
Yeah but... what? It came off as very anti-American. Should this not surprise me considering it was Daniel Shore? Or is Old World Europe to be admired versus Modern Europe?
I'm thinking no africans not americans . . north or south I almost think he left out a Heil Hitler Rocket River
I'm sorry. THIS is the comment that evokes your "eek" icon? Not "I've never seen people enjoy their husbands' deaths so much"? Wowie. Kay.
I'll give you a hint: there are two kinds of wrestling: "real" and "fake." The latter has elements of the former but not vice versa.
Didn't Bush, Cheney or Rumseld refer to France as "Old Europe" in response to their initial opposition to the second Iraq War? Must have been after their New Europe phase (1991 - 2001), when they fought (and died) alongside us in both Desert Storm and Afghanistan. I kind of like these matchups, though, they seem like the European equivalent of a Nebraska/Miami Bowl Game, where their homelands' reputations might actually preclude their skills or abilities, and a large number of spectators actually wish they could somehow both lose. (I can't figure out which is more annoying: a $300 bottle of wine or, if you remember the mid-90's, a Foot Locker store with 300 different types of Cornhusker caps, t-shirts and Tommie Frazier jerseys - and no Oilers gear, of course. You know real-estate agents in Omaha flat out refuse to show houses on Saturdays during the fall?) Ah, Vichys and little Duces prancing around under the watchful eye of Die Panzertruppen. The more things change...
I think it just means European. from Americas Magazine: http://www.americas.oas.org/may98_art36.htm Forty years after its triumphant World Cup soccer victory on European soil, Brazil returns to the Old World to defend the title it reclaimed four years ago in the United States. In addition to the talented Brazilians, the Americas will dispatch teams from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Paraguay, and the United States to try to capture the FIFA (Federation of International Football Associations) World Cup, the most sought-after sports trophy on earth. With a record number of thirty-two teams playing, the competition will open on June 10 in the colossal Stade du France, with a match between Brazil and Scotland, and will conclude in the same stadium on July 12 with the final match. In the elimination phase, 170 nations competed in 643 matches in order to decide which 30 teams would qualify to play in France ‘98. France, as the host country, and Brazil, as the reigning world champion, are the only countries that did not have to qualify. Meanwhile, France is awaiting the arrival of half a million tourists and ten thousand accredited journalists. The tournament’s sixty-two matches will be held in ten cities and programmed so that all the teams will play their three first-round matches in different sites. Two-and-a-half million tickets will go on sale, and organizers are confidant that almost all the matches will be sold out. Seating capacity in the different stadiums averages 46,000, ranging from a minimum of 35,500 in Montpellier to 80,000 in the Stade du France.
Don't begin to think that your crap can fly, okay? If you want to disagree and make an argument, fine... but don't start insulting people and think you can just have your way. I didn't owe you an explanation. In my opinion, you needed it.
I feel as though you're overreacting slightly. I didn't insult you, and my "argument," such as it was, was not particularly complicated. Thanks for looking out for me, though.
1, You criticized me for using an "eek" icon here but not there. I gave an explanation as to why I did and did not use an icon. 2. You didn't have an argument period-- just criticism. I was inviting you to have an "argument" if you wanted to debate some aspect of what I heard.
Why would it come off as anti-American since the quote has nothing to do with the US? I don't know who Daniel Shore is so I am ignorant of any history of hate but I do know that "Old World" means Europe and it comes from the whole emigration process and people having an "Old Country" when the settled in the Americas (not just the US). As for the comment - is it saying that both are great so whoever wins is great or is it saying that it is Europe so it doesn't really matter? I first read it as the latter. So, yeah, I have no clue why this bothered you...but you are giddy so there you are.
I'm glad we're not talking about my crap flying anymore, at least. Do you ever recall a wrestler specifically calling out widows when instructing his enemies to "suck it"? Do you think Vince McMahon would allow it, or would he think it's crossing the line? Do you think Daniel Schorr hates America because he's not rooting for the U.S. to win a match in which it is not taking part? Is there any justification for your claim that his comment "came off as very anti-American"? It sure doesn't read that way to me. Is it just because he (assuming we're talking about the same guy here) works for NPR? What, in short, do you specifically think his implication was? Why? I think this thread should be about Joe Biden's 7-Eleven comment. I could get behind that being pretty stupid.
