I've visited Manhattan, nice place, wouldn't want to live there. I hear Portland is nice, but I have never visited the Pacific Northwest. The internet is full of Cost of Living/Salary Comparison calculators. Beyond that it is all up to personal tastes.
If the salary spread is $12K and you're young....i'd go New York unless you hate the whole big city hustle and bustle thing. You can always leave if you don't like it. You can move to Portland any time. IMO taxes are such a small part of this decision unless the either job is some one-of-a-lifetime opportunity. Good luck. Knicks or Blazers -- not sure I like that choice....Vince seems to like New Jersey.
mateo, I'm in the same boat - 2.9k for a 1 bedroom in the Village. Location, location, location. I didn't move here to live in Jersey, Brooklyn, or the Yupper either side... Post-war building with laundry, doorman, elevator (yeah, you think this doesn't matter 'til you realize most apartment buildings here don't have them)etc. across... I dig what you're saying but I'm too old for the communal/roommate crap. My next roommate will be whichever woman I decide to marry. Hmmmm. maybe we need to get the NYCers on this board together during the season... mateo & across - what are yalls email addy's?
I went to school in NYC and I spend considerable amount of time there since my bro. lives on 74th and Park. Thats arguably some of the priciest real estate in all of the Manhattan. I kind of get sick of NYC after about a month or so partly because of the congestion. If not for the music and comedy scene I probably wouldnt spend much time there anymore. Another place that is booming is Jersey City. Its being called the Wall Street of the West. Alot of my Wall Street buddies are moving there because rent is damn cheap in comparison and you get to be close enough to the big city. I like it because its a 100x quieter and pretty modern too. Not as dirty, and much less people milling around. You can take the train to get into Manhattan pretty easily. The view of the Manhattan buildings from Jersey City is the best you can get anywhere.
Even tho all the gas stations are full service in New Jersey, the price is still CHEAPER than NY gas stations. In fact gas in NJ is about the same price it is in Texas. As of now, regular is at 2.79 a gallon by my work in Jersey City and that's FULL serve. In Manhattan, regular is 3.49 a gallon and that is SELF-Serve. I work in Jersey City and I can tell you, a lot of new developments are popping up. It's nice and the views of Manhattan are great. However, it's getting just AS expensive as living in the city. If it's your first time ever living in NYC, then I suggests trying it out at least ONCE in your life. After a year, then you can move out of the city and get more bang for your buck.
Thanks for the replies. I have decided to go with the Portland offer. I asked for $5000 more than the initial offer in New York (they say they are not willing to accept due to budget constraints )
Hey, I moved from Houston to Portland 15 years ago and wouldn't consider living anywhere else. Get in touch and I'll give you any info you need.
Thanks for offering to help, but I’ve got a cousin who lives in Portland who’ll probably help me out (hopefully ).
