Man, this can't be good news for the Rockets. It doesn't clear up too much cap space for Dallas since the Mavs are taking on Croshere's horrendous contract. But it doesn't make sense. Something smells fishy :(

I am no huge Daniels fan, but this is a sucky trade for Dallas, one of the 1st trades I remember where they gave up a better player just for contract relief. It is not like Dallas will smell the cap, ever.

I still see James as a longshot because Terry is a young, better, version of him and Harris and Stack also do much of his role. I can't see how Dallas could promise him a prominant role with Terry, Harris and Stack--exactly why Daniels didn't have a clear role.

I don't think Fred Jones is available. The Pacers have said they will match any offer for him. I think they are aware that he probably won't get more than around 6 M a year.

This means Dallas either really like Maurice Ager or they plan on replacing Daniels in the backcourt with James.

It definitely sounds dangerous for the Rockets. I think the Mavs intend to replace Daniels with James but with Harris and Terry around he can still get more minutes with us.

They couldn't have gotten more for Daniels? I've been begging for Daniels to get more minutes, good thing he's in Indy. Good, not great, trade for Bird. he got a very good player, but it doesn't really fill a need. I'd still like to see him blow it all up after re-storing Tinsley/JON/Jackson's minimal trade value.

On Dallas' end -- yeah, it replaces KVH for a year, but it won't get them under the cap. They're going to start paying Terry 8-mill a year, which is worth it, but Dirk can opt-out after this season. Even passing on re-signing Croshere and Stack won't get them under the cap.

Always liked Croshere, he should have signed somewhere else in 2000. He never had a chance with Isiah, and with the big contract his confidence was shot by the end of 2000-01. He's never been the same and now he's past his prime.

i could've sworn it was at least 60 days that you have to wait before trading a newly acquired (via trade) player.

Not quite. You can trade a player that you just aquired (via trade) at any time as long as you don't package him with another player. Otherwise it would require 60 days if you want to package him with someone else. And the 48 hours rule is confusion with the sign and trade rules.

He'd be the perfect "pg" in the triangle if we picked him up. I have no idea how this makes dallas better, maybe the contract running out looks appealing to them.

I would assume the trade cannot be consummated until July 12th?

I think this trade makes the Pacers Fred Jones more available now. He is a RFA, but if some team throws him a 4 year FULL MLE deal, the Pacers might not match. They are loaded at the 1-2-3 positions.

Moreoever, you have to wonder if the Pacers are just stockpiling so they can obtain assets/depth to make a 3 for 1 type deal to get Al Harrington in a S&T.

I would love for the Rockets to somehow get Mike James using the Trade Exception and then throw MLE money at Fred Jones.

I love Marquis Daniels. He oozes talent, and given minutes, he will be a very solid contributor for Indiana. I love this deal for the Pacers.

    RR,

You are right on the spot with that one..

Daniels was drafted and received his big Contract form Nelson... He was not a big favorite of Avery. Avery likes guys that are intensed about the game and Daniels was too laid back for him.

Also Daniels was hurt a lot last year.

This is a good trade. Daniels didn't fit into Avery's system and was buried behind Stack, Howard, Terry and Harris. Not to mention they are saving a good amount of money.

KVH is supposedly getting some bites in free agency which is why they picked up Croshere so I definitely don't see the Mavs re-signing KVH.

Honestly I don't know why the Mavs would pick up James cause we don't need him and they are pretty high on Ager.
