http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/30/AR2006063001399.html PRO BASKETBALL Wizards' Jeffries Is Expected to Generate Interest Saturday, July 1, 2006; Page E02 The Wizards have 12 players under contract for next season and would like to lock up a 13th in restricted free agent guard Jared Jeffries . Free agency opens today, and the Wizards have the r ight to match any offer made to Jeffries, who has averaged 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in 256 career games. According to a league source, several teams are interested in Jeffries, including the Bulls, Rockets, 76ers, Spurs and Knicks. Free agents can sign contracts on July 12. Should Jeffries sign an offer sheet, the Wizards would have seven days to match. Jeffries earned just under $2.8 million last season. We're approaching free agency with an open mind," said Jeffries' agent, Andy Miller . The Wizards have $49 million in salary committed for next season (the salary cap will be set on July 29) and President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld has given no indication that the team will be a major player in free agency. The Wizards will have the mid-level exception (about $5 million) available. It will also be an intriguing summer for center Brendan Haywood , whose relationship with coach Eddie Jordan disintegrated last season. Haywood averaged 7.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 23.8 minutes and was replaced in the starting lineup twice. "I've indicated to Ernie that we would like to see Brendan and Eddie sit down and work those issues out, but so far that hasn't happened," said Miller, who also represents Haywood. "At this point, I don't think the situation is productive for either party." While Haywood would welcome a trade, Grunfeld believes Haywood can be an impact player for the Wizards this season. "Last year is behind us and we've put that behind us," Grunfeld said. "Brendan is working hard. . . . He's focused, he's committed and next year is a new season for everybody." The Wizards' summer league squad will practice Monday through Wednesday, and will play in Las Vegas on Thursday through July 13 and in Long Beach, Calif., July 14-18. First-round pick Oleksiy Pecherov will participate, but second-round pick Vladimir Veremeenko won't. According to his agent, Marc Cornstein , Veremeenko has commitments to the Belarusian national team and remains under contract to his team in the Russia Superleague. -- Ivan Carter
I dont see anyway the Rockets can get Jeffries. I would love Jeffries on the Rockets as it would give the team more speed, length and athleticsm. Cleary we are desperate for those. But how do we get Jeffires? I feel like Mike James is more of a priority (MLE). So it would take some SERIOUS GMing to be able to get both of those players. I dont think we have the chops to get it done. And we dont have the ASSETS to trade. I mean, you might have been able to offer the Wizards Swift+2nd rounder in a S&T for Jeffries. But I dont think the Wizards want Howard back.
I think JVG would like to add Jared Jeffries in Rox's rosters since he is a defensse-minded forward, and Lakers also interested in Jeffries too. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baske...,1,1573210.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-nba "The Lakers are also interested in Jared Jeffries, a defense-minded forward who averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds last season for Washington. Because Jeffries is a restricted free agent, the Wizards can match an offer sheet that Jeffries signs. Jeffries, 24, made $2.4 million last season"
i don't see how we can get him either. he will earn more than our TE is worth. so a S&T for the TE is out. I don't think the wiz will want Jho back in a S&T with his contract. they'd probably rather let jeffries go than tie up cap space and lose him. i think we can land him with the MLE, but then we would have the same problems landing MJ who i think is more important to us next year.
I know the guy plays solid defense, but in a fair and consistent number of minutes the last two years, he really doesn't produce all that much, at least statistically. And considering he's 6'11, his shooting % ain't looking to good. Pass, unless he comes cheap.
http://www.washtimes.com/sports/20060630-115508-2205r.htm Wizards' offseason begins with Jeffries By John N. Mitchell THE WASHINGTON TIMES July 1, 2006 At some point this weekend, perhaps as early as today, Washington Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld will talk with Andy Miller, the agent for Jared Jeffries, to begin the team's free agency period. But don't expect it to start with much of a bang. Although Jeffries, the Wizards' lone restricted free agent, is expected to draw strong interest -- and his value no doubt increased when his versatility was on display in the postseason -- business is not expected to be brisk in Washington. At least in the early going. "We've got 12 players signed to contracts, and we've got two rookies," Grunfeld said yesterday. "And Jared is a restricted free agent, so we have the option to match any offer he received if we see fit to do so." A number of teams with salary cap space -- Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta and New Orleans -- have shown interest in Jeffries, a perimeter defender with a long (6-foot-11) frame. Other teams that can't spend as freely -- San Antonio, Philadelphia and New York -- also have shown interest. The Wizards also could include Jeffries in a sign-and-trade, but sources said yesterday that doesn't appear likely. Although the Wizards were permitted to begin talking to free agents at 12:01 a.m. today, deals cannot be signed until July 12. The new salary cap for next season won't be set until July 11 and is expected to be about $52 million, according to league sources. More immediately, the Wizards are focused on what they already have. On Monday, they'll conduct the first of three two-a-day workouts for rookies and free agents at Verizon Center. On Thursday, they'll begin play in the Vegas Summer League at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, where they'll play five games, and then they'll move on to Long Beach, Calif., where they will play four more games.
wow, check this out, Jared Jeffries's Off Rebounds per game is almost same as Def Rebounds. Let's S&T and take this guy!!! CAREER AVERAGES REBOUNDS PER GAME YEAR TEAM OFF DEF RPG 02-03 WAS 1.3 1.6 2.9 03-04 WAS 2.2 3.0 5.2 04-05 WAS 2.0 2.9 4.9 05-06 WAS 2.1 2.8 4.9 Career 2.0 2.8 4.8 Playoff 2.4 2.4 4.9
That probably isn't likely because Washington doesn't want to take back salaries. So perhaps a SnT for the TE could be something we could do. Too bad I'm looking for a backup PF/C for the TE. We got a lot of holes to fill.
Assume our MLE is sloted for James and go from there. If the Rockets really want Jeffries, they can send their 2007 1st round pick + Sura (expiring contract) to the Wizards in a S&T.
