A sign and trade for James with what? Head/Skip/ Bowen.
We just don't have any assets at all to get anyone.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Is it time to rethink Shawn Kemp?

im not sure how much truth there is to it, but its still a frightening possibility

"Free-agent guard Jason Terry has told teammates that they can expect him to re-sign as early as possible, but the Mavs -- who also hope to sign Howard and Dirk Nowitzki to contract extensions -- still plan to pursue Toronto's Mike James in a sign-and-trade. Mavs coach Avery Johnson is a fan of James' toughness and confidence and likes the idea of playing James and Terry together." (emphasis added)

this was from marc steins article today

while im no mike james apologist, that would be a dagger to the heart if he ended up in dallas

Does anybody know what Jay Williams looks like? Last I heard he was still working out.

We need to grab Jay Williams at 12:01 and see if we can get him to sign a league minimum deal if he will take it. Hopefully, we would be allowed to throw incentives into that contract to get him to take it. If he would take that deal, there could be no better fit than a team like ours that needs a backup point so badly. And he could turn into a great assett with very low risk. It will be interesting to see what teams offer him.

    Incentives?

This is not the NFL or a similar sport where a team that is over the "cap" can get away with incentives.

    There are 3 exceptions for teams over the cap to land new players (FAs);

    1. MLE

    2. $1.6 Exception

    3. Minimum exception

We cannot use our $1.6M Exception this season.

If we offer and incentive ladden contract then you are virtually digging into your MLE even if you start off at minimum exception.

If you give someone the minimum, you cannot go higher lest you be using money from your MLE.

At this point, what moves could we make to have a very solid lineup?

Sign Mike James and Gooden? I'm not sure. I'm just not happy with the Gay/Battier trade. As already said, we lose depth, athleticism, and talent. We need some BIG offseason moves. Unfortunately for us, the free agent pool is small. :/

Thanks for the clarification Fegwu. I didn't think we could do it but was hoping it was possible. I wonder if any team is going to offer Jay Williams mroe than league minimum??

There are such things as incentives in the NBA. But they're not very popular because they may or may not count against the cap. See the league will deem each incentive as either "likely to be acheived" or "unlikely to be acheived". If it's "likely" then it counts against the cap, and obviously "unlikely" wouldn't. But it's totally up to the league on what they deem likely or unlikely. See link for more details.

As for Jay Williams, who knows. He's been saying he's ready to play for over a year now, but why wasn't he playing in the D-league or Europe or somewhere order to prove that he can play. I'd try and get him on our summer league roster, but no way would I be offering a guaranteed contract yet.

I have a trade exception question. If a team has their MLE but prefers not to use it to acquire a player, can that team sign a player for another team and trade it immediately for a trade exception? It seems that the trade exception would have some value for a contending team during the season (much more than an MLE).

Hypothetical Example: Jerry West owes Carroll Dawson a favor. He doesn't plan on signing any free agents. Can he sign a free agent for $4.2MM and immediately trade that player to the Rockets for the Moochie TE? He would have a valuable TE, and could possibly use it at the deadline if the Grizzlies are competitive.

No. Once you sign another team's free agent, you can't trade him for 60 days or something (I'd have to check the exact date). But he could sign and trade his own free agent (i.e. Bobby Jackson) and move him in a deal for our TE. And Jackson wouldn't be a bad fallback option if we strike out with James.

Jerry West disagrees with the above.

Take that a step further. Can we send the TE to Memphis say for a re-signed BJax and then send BJax and say Howard or one of our other players to another team for one of their players that has a salary that matches both BJax new salary plus the salary of the other player we sent out. Like say could we send the TE to Memphis for a re-signed BJax and then send BJax and Juwan to Portland for Zach Randolph?

What about Jerry Stackhouse. He's free. I really like Q.Woods now that he's cleaned up his act. He's 24, very atheletic and actually has some seasoning now. Can play 2/3. Battier,Tracy, and Woods would really provide this team versitility at the 2/3. Plus you probably can get him for 2m a yr.

Lee, the Mavs intend to resign Stackhouse and he wants to stay in Dallas so you can cross him off your list. They are also reporting today that they will extend Dirk for 3 more years and also get Terry and Howard resigned.

Woods holds the ball a bit too much for my tastes. But considering the shambles that is our backcourt, I'd target him if James goes elsewhere. And from what I understand Woods was Larry Brown's boy, so the Knicks probably aren't that interested in keeping him.
