i run into at least a couple of these a day here at work. i'm not really irked by them but they are so easy to spot, and usually from the same people. i just feel that if you're gonna greet someone with a "good morning" at least accompany it with a genuine smile. just an observation on my part. go on with your day.

I love the fake smile, I use it all the time in pictures. It really reminds me of the school pictures you use to take in elementary school.

lol, i admit to doing it in pictures, only b/c the whole picture taking stuff is tedious. maybe i'm just a hypocrite. :) (that was genuine).

I use the fake smile in elevators as a silent 'sorry' for the fart I just let forth.

That's exactly why I don't smile at anybody...

I kind of have to... I have a "pissed off" look on my face naturally.

It drives me nuts but it's better than the fake "I wish you'd die because you smell like warm squirrel vomit." look people give ya all the time

I give people the fake smile much much more than I genuinely smile. Come to think of it, the only way to get me to genuinely smile is to make me laugh.

I think the fake smile goes hand in hand with the fake nice voice.

Oh I'm the master of that one too. But then again, I'm a teacher, so maybe it's just part of the trade to master fake human interactions.

To me, if it is a just a greeting in the hallway, the onus is on you to elicit a genuine smile. They have to be genuinely happy to see you. I recommend randomly busting a break dance move or two in the hallway. Soon, people will either smile at you genuinely, or just run away. Both are good.

i try to always genuinely smile during a greeting. i'm sure i've flashed a few fake ones occassionally. overall, it's the people who fake it consistently that always give off a grumpy vibe.

I don't know about fake smiles, but I use fake smilies all the time.. for example, "Go to hell :)" or "Your mother wears polyester :) :)"

Or "Let's trade Gay and Swift for Shane Battier :) :) :)"

How do you interpret the up-and-down, once over followed by a fake smile?

my eye brows kind of curve in a way that makes me look pissed even though i am not. i once was with a friend talking to one of his buddies who I didn't know and the guy was like "hey...don't kick my ass!" . LOL

But, when I do get pissed, then my eye brows really make me look pissed because they slant even more than they do naturally. Chances are if you didn't know me and we're meeting me for the first time where I didn't give you a fake smile...you would probably I'm "damn pissed to meet you!".
