While I don't think this trade is the type of move that would cripple the franchise, I truly believe that it'll be one of those things where you just look back on it and go "ARRRRGH!!"

Even moreseo than trading three 1st rounders for Eddie Griffin or picking Dickerson, Drew, and Turkcan over Rashard Lewis.

If CD can break promises to Rashard, he should be able to break promises to West too! :D

You're not a Rockets' fan, then.

It seems to me that you're one of those famous "Yao-only" fans.

If Gay is Rookie of the Year next year, I'll applaud Jerry West for a job well done, while watching the Rockets in the playoffs.

I'll say this much, though: Gay won't be Rookie of the Year next year. Especially not on Memphis.

Brandon Roy is rookie of the year.

What would I do if Rudy Gay wins Rookie of the Year? Nothing. So what? That's fine and dandy if Gay wins the award. But, what ultimately matters is if OUR team, the Houston Rockets, is better than last year.

We'll be a good playoff team regardless.

If we get injuries that would make us regret trading Gay, then we wouldn't last long in the playoffs anyways.

Gay's success on the Rockets would've hinged on injuries and a bad season, and that's assuming that he'd thrive on the extra playing time.

In principle, we don't have the depth for him to redshirt another season, but dealing Gay and Swift should mean there's something great about Battier everyone's missing.

I guess it doesn't make sense because this is rare and the opposite happens, like trading Elton Brand for a high potential prospect....

Gay wouldn't have been rookie of the year on the Rockets under ANY imaginable circumstance unless he was the consensus #1 pick ...like Lebron. But then we wouldn't have gotten him. ;)

TMac and Gay play the same position and have similar type of games ...only that TMac is LIGHT years ahead of Gay. So that translates into Gay not being rookie of the year in a Rockets uniform. ...but maybe in Memphis. I'm not saying he wouldn't have helped us immensly for years to come ...just saying he wasn't going to get enough touches or even minutes here.

Exactly. And if he wasn't going to get enough touches here, it definitely won't happen in Memphis. In reality, next year, Gay will get about 20 minutes. He'll end up scoring maybe 7 points a game on Memphis. He'll be their 5th, maybe 6th or 7th option.

Good point. Nobody ever seems to get enough touches in Memphis. That team just seems directionless. Why would they want Stromile back?

I just wish we'd have gotten their #24 pick. We could have gotten Maurice Ager, Novak and Battier. That would have been a nice draft.

I guess this is where I differ from a lot of you. While I'm not convinced he'd be a starter from day 1, I'm almost positive he'd force himself into the starting lineup by midseason.

Some of you guys are really selling this kid short. He's not just a raw, unpolished athlete. He's a fundamentally sound player. Gay has good shooting form, displays good footwork, he's a smart, willing passer, and by all accounts he works hard in practice. More importantly though, he has all the tools to be an excellent defensive player, and could probably guard 3 or 4 positions with some teaching and experience.

I watched a lot of UConn's games this past year. I really don't think that Gay's a guy that's going to need the ball in his hands to be effective.

    Memphis reminds me of this:

Anytime you're playing a sports game, be it baseball, football, or basketball, you want to stack your team with all the talent you can (any OOTPers know what I'm talking about). Soon, your team is so loaded with this prospective talent that no matter what they do, they're underacheiving and nobody's happy. Because nobody's happy, you keep shipping those not living up to expectations out, and bringing new potential in, hoping it'll change something. It never does.

The thread title suggests he'll be rookie of the year. I'm just saying he had no prayer of being ROY on the Rockets and probably not much chance on the Grizz either. Neither team will highlight Gay's assets to their fullest.

The biggest knock on him and probably the reason he fell so far was his effort and intensity. You have to want to play defense.

    Oh well....

    I agree with you dha.

What some people thought Gay was too passive. I thought that rather he let the game come to him. Similiarly on the Rockets he would not require the ball a great deal to score. And while he is incredibly athletic, the guy has great form on his jumper. I think his future is bright, but I do think he can contribute significantly this year. I've been saying this in every thread, but all of the past Uconn lotto picks (Charlie Villanueva, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon, Caron Butler, Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen, Donyell Marshall) made major contributions their rookie years. I think Gay will be no different.

I guarantee we'll make it to the playoffs if TMac is healthy and Yao continues to play like the 2nd half of last season. They are unstoppable and there is no way we don't make it. The question is can we get out of the first round?

i would say we will. the nba is going with a new format for the playoff seeding where the seeds are determined by record alone. a team from each division still has to make the playoffs, but they will be seeded by record.

we won't have to face SAS or DAL in the first round. i think they will be 1 and 2, phoenix = 3, we = 4.

spending the MLE on MJ would give us a great team at the 1, 2, and 3.

    yao-deke
    jho-hayes
    battier-novak
    tmac-head
    rafer-MJ

next season we will spend the MLE and our draft pick on a 4 and a 5. we will have a complete team and win a championship within the next 3 seasons.

the problem is, gay would be ready to step in for tmac in 3 or 4 years (as a go to player, not tmac status) and we could keep rolling.

Well I'm already a Tennesse Titans fan because Vince "greatest college player ever" Young is over there. So I might as well root for the Grizzlies while I'm at it.

But if we get better next year it won't have anything to do with this trade. The Rockets will automatically be a better team if T-Mac and Yao are healthy, nothing to do with Battier. He's not an impact player who factors into wins and losses. If he's a factor in the w/l column then you have to wonder about why he is a part of "0-12" in the playoffs.
