This is where Bobby Sura comes in handy... James get on a hot streak... Coach JVG gives the signal to Bobby... Bobby comes in... Mike James goes down... That would be great. Keep on the list all year and bring him out only for the Dallas games.
I didn't see this posted anywhere, but if this has already been mentioned and I over looked it then please forgive me for the repeat. Basically the reason they are looking at MJ and other guards is that they don't want to end up in the same situation as they did with Nash a few years ago. Nash, all but guaranteed that he was resigning with Dallas and then Phoenix came in with a big offer and Nash was gone. They don't want to lose Jason but, word on the street is that he is going to be offered a lot of money and there is a great possibilty that he may walk. T_Man
The word on your street is probably wrong. Think about it. If there were a lot of teams with cap space needing a PG, those same teams would be bidding on Mike James as well as Terry. It is only a coincidence that it's a Mavs PG. The team cap enviroments are entirely different. PHX deliberately dumped salary to pursue Nash who was once a Sun and never sold his home in PHX. This summer, only CHI, CHA and ATL have cap space to make Terry (or James) a big offer. Two of the three have their PG's and Terry has already worn out his welcome in ATL.
I agree....but Terry is an unrestricted free agent. But from everything I've been hearing, it's considered a no-brainer that he'll be back. James would muddy the waters at the point in a big way. Daniels is an up-and-comer who really is an effective slasher, rebounder, and defender. Again, remember, this is Dallas......and Cuban is addicted to trading like it's Heroin.
GATER - your calculations have a couple of very large flaws: 1) The $39.3 mil number you cite includes Mike James 3rd year, which he will opt out of. You can't count him twice. The number you should be using is $35.6 mil. 2) The $6.8 mil showing for Alvin Williams is also flawed. The amount is not fully guaranteed and it is widely assumed he will either be bought out or retire. If he's bought out, I think the contract value is about $4 mil, but if he retires, it comes off the cap completely (since he has played only one game over the past 2 seasons). This would bring the Raptors salary total to under $30 mil! There's also been talk that the contract will be traded to another team, in which case the full amount of the incoming player would count, but that remains to be seen. 3) The salary cap is expected to be at, or slightly over $50 mil this season. It won't be determined until later this summer, of course, but it is expected to go up from last season's cap.
1) The base is (as I stated) 39Mto 40M w/o James. You are neglecting to include the ~3M for the first round pick. 2) If Williams is bought out, the buy out amount hits the cap. Even if Williams can't play his situation parallels Sura's. And I am 90% sure we will not get medical cap relief if Sura can't go. It's possible but hard for me to believe that Williams will take a $4M lump sum when he is owed $12M. IMHO, you are being too generous to the Raps. Further, Williams can't be traded unless he takes his $6.8M player option. If he does that, his full contract and buyout is handled by the receiving team and they get the buyout hit. The only reason a team would take Williams is to dump salalry. Remember how many offers we got for Wesley's $6M expiring contract? And if Williams is traded, the incoming salary depletes cap space. 3) FWIW, I have heard in the media every year since I've been on Clutch Fans that the cap is going over $50m. It hasn't been close yet. Your points are basically valid and tend to mean the Raps will have cap space. But I still feel that the "how much" is very open to interpretation.
Actually, the word is correct. Dallas is looking at the fact that Jason is waiting to sign to see who is going to throw the big money at him. He is saying the same thing that Nash did before he left "I really like Dallas and I love the team... Blah Blah Blah." Basically Dallas is looking for a backup so that they are not in the same position as they were before. You can spin your finances with all the teams that you want.. Not going there with you. Just giving you the info as I know it, take it or leave it. T_Man
I don't care much for Cuban. But you don't need to be an upscale billionaire/millionaire to understand the importance of a contigency plan. Seeing what the Raps would want for James in a SnT is only good business. But IMHO, you're placing good business practice on par with a good probability of occurence. They are IMO, mutually exclusive events.
No joke. Harris should be contending for serious minutes next season. Aquiring James just doesn't make sense.
