Why doesn't the US media care as much?

Because outside of the Houston Rocket fanbase, Yao's recuperation is probably not really that big of a deal.

Die-hard Rox fans in Houston and China are probably the only ones that really care.

This isn't "big" news anyways. Things are going a little better than expected but that about it. Hardly - Sportscenter material.

Also - the interview did take place in China. Yao is bigger news there. Why would some US paper send a journalist halfway across the globe to interview Dave Macha?

If I was going to make up a story I would think of something sexier than a Dave Macha interview.

Another interview of David Macha by Basketball Pioneers on June 25 (Sunday) that revealed the latest status of Yao Ming's restoration.

Basketball Pioneers: Yao Ming did not appear in the Shanghai Sharks' Meilong Training Centre yesterday. So did he train yesterday?

David Macha: Yes, Yao Ming basically persists in his training every day. We just changed our venue yesterday, as different places can provide different restoration condition. Yesterday, it was basically no-ball training for Yao Ming that just focused primarily on strength and footworks. So we just carried it on here in the gymnasium of the hotel that I stayed (Shanghai Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel). Today is Sunday, so it is a rest day for Yao Ming. He will resume his training tomorrow, but as to the details of the training, we will discuss it tonight.

Basketball Pioneers: Then is there specifically a formulated training program for Yao Ming by the Rockets ?

David Macha: Yes, I have brought along such a plan, and we will carry it out together with Yao Ming over this period of time. That is precisely what I am here for. Since his injury in April, there had already been a long period that Yao Ming had not done any training at all. We need to gradually add load to his left foot. Actually when we were still in Houston, we have already started his restoration training. What we need to do now is to hope that by August 1, Yao Ming can return to court, and be able to freely turnaround, move, accelerate and shoot. We will slowly increase the load and intensity to his training, depending on the response of his left foot. Our ultimate goal is that when he returns in the new season, he will be in much better shape on the court than before.

Basketball Pioneers: When will you then pass Yao Ming over to Anthony Falsone ?

David Macha: Yao Ming and I will probably go to Beijing on July 1. I will stay in Beijing until July 4 or 5. That 4 to 5 days will be when I will pass Yao Ming over to Anthony. I will need to discuss with Anthony on our next steps of action. Then I will fly back to Houston. Then Yao Ming will be left in the safe hands of Anthony.

Basketball Pioneers: You, Falsone and Bill were all one point or the other the strength and conditioning coaches of the Rockets, and you all served Yao Ming. So what role you respectively played ?

David Macha: Anthony has worked for 10 years for the Rockets. He was at Yao Ming's side ever since Yao Ming's rookie season. They mutually understand and trust each other and had built unusual tacit understanding and chemistry. Anthony is a great professional, and he specializes in strength enhancement/body building. I have learnt alot from him, and had applied what I learnt from him to help Yao Ming and other Rockets players as well. As for myslef, I specialize in players' restoration (from injury). What I can do is from the medical angle aspect to help Yao Ming to restore to health as soon as possible. As for Bill, he specializes in the strength and skills training aspect; he knows exactly what each player needs. Individually we have our own specialties, and we complement each and other, and therefore we can help Yao Ming to restore at different stages.

Basketball Pioneers: I noticed that Yao Ming often went to measure his body weights during the training break. Does he need to control his body weight ?

David Macha: Yes. Yao Ming is now heavier than he was in the regular season, and that will add unnecessary pressure to his injured left foot. Therefore he must start to control his body weight such that he can move around more nimble. But as of now, alot of the conventional methods, like running, are unsuitable for Yao Ming's situation. Therefore we need to think of some other ways to help him to reduce his body weights. Recently Yao Ming frequently went to the swimming pool to practice swimming, jump and run in the water, or do some bicycling. These were all designed to help reducing his body weights but at the same time avoid adding excessive pressure to his injured foot.

Basketball Pioneers: So how much has Yao Ming restored ? How long will it take for him to be 100% restored ?

David Macha: He is restoring as per our schedule, but as of now, his left foot is still not sufficient to withstand strong and intense competition. Therefore there is still alot of work for us to do. From a basketball perspective, it is very difficult for me to give an assessment, as I am not a basketball player or coach; I am only a strength and conditioning trainer. After Yao Ming arrives into Beijing, Antony will tailor-make a training program for him. We will try any methods we know on Yao Ming that can help him to restore as soon as we possibly can; but since no players are the same, we have to wait and see the effect of such treatments on him. To be frank with you, no one knows for sure when Yao Ming can restore 100%.

Basketball Pioneers: So when can Yao Ming return to the basketball court ?

David Macha: Well in fact it is there for everyone to see, Yao Ming has now already started some training with the basketball. In light of the present circumstances, I think Yao Ming can return to court this following week, but then again he will be restricted in doing some particular movements.
