This has got to be the most frustrating thing that I have ever done in my life. Seriously - painting is not fun - it sucks. More specifically painting the trim where the wall meets the ceiling or window/door trim sucks bad. Ive tried using a brush, one of those sure line square things, a piece of sheet metal to use as a sheild and every other tactic I can think of - paint still gets on the ceiling or trim!! And dont even get me started on the Blue Tape.... That stuff is worthless junk. Any tips? ideas? suggestions? I cant afford painters, but its maddening to look at my sloppy job.
Are you waiting until the paint actually dries to take off the worthless blue tape, or taking the tape off while the paint is still wet? You might be putting the paint on too thickly, also, two thin coats is better than one thick coat...
Instead of that little square thing, I just used a super thin roller (about 1 1/2" wide). Just go slow, keep the pressure even with it, and you shouldn't get paint anywhere.
House painting and moving are two things that i will be paying other people to do for the rest of my life.
here's some advice... hire painters. I hate painting too! I painted a living room once, with 14' ceilings that was all red... i put two coats of KILZ then two coats of paint... all walls AND the ceiling!
When you used the brush, did you use an angled brush? Those things rock! I've never had problems painting in critical spots when I've used an angled brush. And of course, go slow and steady. And use moderation, like A-train already said.
Yes I did. The problem lies with the mother fu#king popcorn texture thats on the ceiling.... !!! I hate that ****. The brush skips over parts that have a big blob of texture, then when you go back to touch up you have to blot it and it ends up getting on the ceiling.... As you can tell Im a little frustrated
How?? I put the damn tape on the trim and get it looking perfect. I press firmly on the tape to make sure there arent any spots of air or whatever. I paint, let it dry for 24 hours, take off the tape and there are damn spots everywhere I paint. Why God why???
First you should take the popcorn off. Give it a light water spray. I use a gardern sprayer but don't spray too much, you just want to losen it up and keep the dust down. Take a 4+ inch scraper (plastic is fine) and scrape the ceiling. Be careful to not let a corner of the scraper gouge the ceiling by keeping the scraper flat (having a wider scraper helps keep the gouging down). You can use a wastebasket to catch the droppings as you go if you want to go for the faster cleanup but if it's your 1st time, just be prepared for a large cleanup even with drop clothes. After you have finished scraping, let it dry and apply some drywall mud where you need to (accidental gouges, nail heads, ceiling imperfections, etc). Let that dry and you are ready to sand. Then wipe off any fine particles with a damp cloth and now you are ready to paint. 2 coats should do it. Wipe the baseboard down with a damp cloth. Let it dry and then tape around the baseboards - apply the tape well. If you don't put it on good every little inch of the way, paint will find it's way under the tape. Also, you may need to score the tape after painting to keep the tape from pulling up the new paint. That should take care of the bottom. Buy a good cutting (angle) brush - it should be around $10 or more. Cut in around the top, starting low (1/4" down from the top) and cut your way up. Once you've cut in all around where a roller won't get, then roller being careful not to touch the ceiling. I've had good results doing the above and the good thing by doing the ceiling too is that if you do make a mistake, you have the correct paint for touchups. Plus a smooth ceiling looks sooo much better.

Whoa. This is completely un-necessary. I can't think of anything more messy and time consuming than removing the texture off the drywall.
I did that too..... It didnt take that long but my arm was tired. It was like 1979 popcorn - huge globs all over the wall - looked terrible. I scraped for a few days, but eventually got it all off.
