List your favorite physical comics and their best performances:

Chris Farley (the Chipindales skit with Patrick Swayze)
John Belushi (dancing in the Blues Brothers)
Michael Richards (the catwalk when Elaine tries to auction him off)
John Ritter (the post-shock therapy scene in Skin Deep, one of the most underrated movies ever)

    I know I'm forgetting some.

Actually it does....and it gets better with Jim Carrey.

I remember watching an HBO standup comedy special years ago, after I first moved out to LA, maybe around 1986-1987. Jim Carrey was an unknown comic. He did a standup act that was all impersonations, but they were impersonations where he made his voice AND his face look like the celebrity he was impersonating.

It was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. I distinctly remember him doing Clint Eastwood and I was floored. Absolutely spot-on.

Everyone else who didn't put Charlie Chaplin as number one will be fined $50. :p

    1. Charlie Chaplin - The Kid

    2. Buster Keaton - Sherlock Jr.

    3. Harpo Marx - Animal Crackers(tied with several others for him.)

    4. Jackie Chan - Project A II
The fact is that the comedians who had experience in the silent era were better trained at physical comedy, and more adept. The three I listed were also innovators and their gimmicks have been used ever since.

I remember that one, it was with Rodney Dangerfield. Most of the people on that show are know people now.

I watched a show on the Three Stooges yesterday, they were great physical comics. Nuk Nuk Nuk.

Recent and underrated choice for me would have to be Terry Crews. He just cracks me up with that dance scene from White Chicks every single time.

But definitely Jim Carrey for me though.

You 'Young Ones' fans should check out this CD:

They did a spoof of a british metal band with Brian May from Queen. It's even funnier than Spinal Tap, and that's saying something.

    Buster Keyton was my favorite.

Keep in mind that back in the day they had no special effects and no stuntmen. The list of the injuries he sustained pursuing his craft was amazing, and nobody today would do anything 1/10 as dangerous as the stuff he did many times every film. In the general there are scenes of him falling all over the place on a moving train and it really is him doing it the whole time. Amazing.

Harold Lloyd also did crazy stuff, such as in Saftey Last, where he really does hang off the side of a tall building with NO saftey net,

Lloyd was short two fingers because of an accident with a prop bomb from a film. That really is giving it up for your craft.

    Keyton really was amazing!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Jerry Lewis. One of the best.

Peter Sellers in a bunch of flicks. See The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark, for samples.

Half the original crew of SNL. Chase, Belushi, Aykroyd, and Murray, starting in '77, were all terrific.

Farley, Dane Cook, Jim Carrey. does Lewis Black count as physical comedy? He moves his hands like a mad man.
