A fatwa can only be issued by a scholar of Islam, one who has been studying the Qur'an and the Hadiths for many scores of years.

al-Sistani is the reason Iraq hasn't completely disintegrated since the invasion. He has saved GWB's bacon in Iraq a number of times. Hopefully he will live a long time and continue to exert influence.

Remember the thread a year or two ago about Shias supposedly being more extremist than Sunnis.

I'll say it again: If the mullahs ever lose their grip on Iran and the will of the people take over, Iran will surprise people. It may not happen but we can hope.
