Some workout results are slowly trickling out. http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/5687786 It says that Gansey lifted 185 lbs 16 times (which is excellent for a guard), and recorded a 34" vertical (which is very respectable). Rashad McCants for example, another undersized SG, put up 15 reps and a 34.5" vertical last year. Gansey looks scrawny but it appears that he's deceptively strong and athletic. I think he's worth a look at 32. He's a great shooter, with 3 pt and midrange game, can play off the ball, and actually led his team in rebounding (he's averaged 5 or more rebounds every year in college). I see him as a cross between Wesley and Sura, with some of Wesley's strength and shooting, and Sura's rebounding instincts. I'm waiting for the full combine results (especially the agility drills, which measures lateral quickness), but Gansey looks good for a 2nd rounder. Draftexpress scouting report Gansey College Stats
I've been saying for a long time that I wanted Gansey in the second round. More reports like this might really raise his stock though. Maybe, just maybe up and beyond the #32, but I obviously hope not.
^ Ya, I've had Gansey on my radar for quite a while now. I first saw him play in the preseason tourney against UT and he was awesome. The kid can shoot, drive, rebound, and is a pretty decent defender IIRC. Really reminds me of Jon Barry.
Gansey looks good for a 2nd rounder because he probably will be drafted in the first -- late 20s. Intriguing as Steve Novak is, Gansey is the better choice IF he is still there.
What a crackup. Guys getting all hot about Gansey's athleticism, and his vertical is 2" short of J.J.'s. LOL, what a hoot.
Is JJ potentially avaliable at 32? I rest my case. BTW, where'd you find JJ's vertical. I'm trying to find some more but they are way slow in coming out. Hopefully in the next day or two ESPN or whoever releases the combine numbers.
Bingo. Also, where is it documented that J.J. has a 36" vertical? I like to think I've got my finger pretty tightly pressed on the pulse of this draft, but I haven't seen this info.
I think Gansey will be a solid player in the NBA. Jay Bilias said that the only reason Gansey wasn't an All-American was because he didn't play at Duke (think about that: a Duke fan semi-quoting a Duke grad who is semi-taking a shot at Duke). Bilias went on to point out in this article back in January on ESPN ( I remember reading it, but did not look it up yet) that Gansey does the same things Reddick does, but also brings the ball up the court. Gansey runs around the same amount of screens, but plays better D and rebounds better too. I like Pittsnoggle too, but I think that's just because its a lot more fun to say "Pittsnoggle" than "Gansey" or "Reddick"; in fact, I now covert a "Pittsnoggle" jersey.
I watched several West Virginia games for the past two years. Gansey is the epitome of hustle and grit with some actual ability (unlike Rybo). He really reminds of me of Bobby Sura. Sura was never particularly quick and never really shot the ball that great, but he was full of grit and effort and it really paid off for the Rockets when he played. Gansey has the potential to be that guy. He has a lightning quick trigger and has become a good three point shooter over the years. (He only really became a great shooter last year, the year before he was average at best) He has consistently worked to improve his game. What I like about him is his excellent basketball IQ. He doesn't turn the ball over. And despite his mediocre athleticism, he always finds creative ways to make to the basket and moves well without the ball. He really benefits from playing in an offense without a focal point and as a result developed an all-around game. He can be the guard that will pick up rebounds like Sura used to do. He's a gritty defender who probably works too hard sometimes. For a second round pick, he would be an excellent pickup and could play immediately.
maybe jopatmc's real aim was to hand out laughs as comic relief...because, really, the whole redick thing is pretty much beaten to death and this thread is about gansey, right? i've been searching for jj's measurables, too, and haven't seen a report on his vertical. gansey would be great at #32. what i like about his game is that he does little things well. he gets to loose balls, knows when to go for a strip or a steal, etc. i think he's a good shooter, but the rockets have drafted "good shooters" before. dan langhi may have shot it well in workouts and in practice, but he didn't do anything else well. if his shot wasn't falling (which was most of the time) in games, he was useless. i think gansey has a good overall court awareness and could contribute significantly off the bench. i'd take him over novak or pittsnogle or any other shooting "specialist" at #32.
I've preached the benefits of picking Gansey at #32 in several threads. I think the comparisons to Sura are pretty fair but Gansey can shoot.
