That article reflects a lack of research on the writer's part. Nevermind that Wayne Graham should take sole responsibility for the fact that all three of them are multimillionaires. The reason it took them a long time to sign wasn't b/c they thought they shouldn't pitch in the summer of 2004, but rather they were waiting for the top 2 picks to sign so the slot values could be determined. Townsend had very contentious disagreements with the Orioles who originally took him and kept trying to lowball him on his contract. He decided to go back and get his degree from Rice (quite admirably, imo) and sit out the year. When he tried to pitch again he wasn't of the same form. Niemann and Humber will rebound without much of a problem. That article's a bunch of crap.
Even though they are in physically located in the state of Texas, I never root for UT or is it TU. Dig'em Armadillos! And Go Rice!
I bet you don't enjoy it as much winning National Championships (see 1949, 1950, 1979, 1983, 2002, 2005). We can't win it every year bigtexxx, but don't worry, we should be back next year w/ an older and more experienced team. Since you follow college baseball so closely bigtexxx, maybe you would like inform the rest of us the losing streak ya'll have against us. What's that number now?
So what? Some kind of arm surgery is fairly common among pitchers. How about you go after their summer league coaches? Their high school coaches? Their minor league managers? Trying to lay the blame directly on Wayne indicates a personal issue with him.
Maybe they just had weak a$$ arms. Pitchers are so babied these days, like their arms are made out of fine china.
You brag about meaningless mid-week games where we throw our garbage pitchers. I brag about Omaha games. We have a 2 game winning streak against you there. Wish we could have extended it this year in Omaha, but your team disappointed me.
Ya, this season was disappointing but we had a very young team (I think we only had 1 Sr.) but it was another #1 recruiting class for Augie so I'm confident we'll be back in Omaha very soon. BTW, I'm not braggin about meaningless mid-week games. Just thought I would point out that ya'll haven't beaten us in 3 years and have 2 National Championships the past 4 seasons (ya'll have the chance as well), 6 Total National Championships. So why are you talking down UT again?
I thought you were about the scholar athlete... so what does getting PAID have to do with that?.. Are you are a student who can play.. or do you do the game to get paid?
A laughable attempt to divert the focus of the thread. Please enroll asap in the SamFisher school of intra-thread baiting. TIA This is in response to gwayneco's claim that Wayne Graham ruins pitchers. I am very much about the scholar athlete. Wade Townsend and Philip Humber in particular were stellar student-athletes (not sure about Niemann, but I have no reason to believe he wasn't...), and Wade even took the admirable step to finish his degree at Rice, despite the promise of millions from MLB.
You can be for college baseball players being STUDENTS.. and still hope they get paid when they are done.. In fact, one of the keys to academic schools doing well in baseball is the fact that you have the opportunity to get an education while still improving your future earning potential..
No I just get a certain sick pleasure from getting T-sippers all riled up. Goes back to the old SWC days.
What will there rotation be like for Omaha? I know they usually have stronger starters...how many really strong starters do they have this year?
Right....Because at some point, when actual victories become difficult and damn near impossible in Aggie Land, man's new best friend becomes the "moral victory."
The starting rotation will likely be 1) Eddie Degerman - in my opinion the best college pitcher in America 2) Bobby Bell - amazing changeup 3) Craig Crow - great curveball Joe Savery is our #2 pitcher, but his arm was hurting him this past weekend, so I'm not sure if he'll pitch or not in Omaha. It would be a loss if he didn't but we still have great depth. Our bullpen is the best in Omaha - we have an embarrassment of riches in terms of relief pitchers. We have two legitimate closers. One of them hit 97 mph a few times last weekend (Bryce Cox) in shutting down the Sooners.
Wrong assumption partner, I didn't attend Nuremberg on the Brazos. I admit to being a Cougar High grad and as far as sports go now, UH half the time can't beat Rice. I'm just am reminiscing some of the old SWC days. They sure were fun, but times change. UH can't even dream anymore of being on UT's level, reality sometimes is a real downer. I just had a disturbing flashback of people wearing pig hats on their heads at the Dome.
Yep! We're taking Redick (even if he is a drunk). This is the REAL scoop of this thread. Seriously, though, good luck to Rice. I'm a UT fan who loves to see Houston schools do well. A rare breed, I guess.
Nuremberg on the Brazos, eh? I like that...Now THAT'S funny. And I know what you mean about the pig heads....Ughhhh, we went out to Fayetteville a few years back for the UT-Arkansas game where UT really lucked out at the end with that Matt Jones fumble and pulled it out. Those fans were pretty scary. I thought we might die that night. I think the state motto out there was "You sure do got a purdy mouth...." Eeek, frightening people, though the landscape around campus was very nice.... And growing up in H-town, I was a big UH fan before I was anything else. Too bad they couldn't build on some of that success back then- being excluded from the Big 12 and other power conferences really hurt them. Maybe the new coaches haven't spliced enough p*rn and naked women into practice tape....
