Is still only 36 and he has 546 career hr. Do you think he can make a run at the all-time record. I know he has been injury prone since he got to Cincy but he also shows if he is healthy he's still one helluva all-around player. Can he get to 700?
i don't think so. he's injured WAY too much. to make a run at it he would have to have about 5 completely healthy seasons, and i doubt that as griff gets older he gets healthier. i still wonder what would have happened if he never did go through all those injuries, because he was an absoulutely terrific player when he was younger.
Unfortunately, his career has been racked with injury and I doubt he will get healthier as he gets older. He has only hit 30+ HRs once in the past 6 years and is on pace to hit 25-30 this year. If he were to stay healthy for the next 4 years (140 games a year), he would probably make 700, but I don't think he will.
It's kind of sad. When he was in his prime with Seattle, it was almost a given that he would break the record. Things sure can change in a hurry.
yup could have been the greatest player ever if he could have stayed healthy. interesting to see the two roads griffey and bonds took.
sans injuries, griffey would've gone down as the greatest player in of all time IMO. the guy could do everything, and do them all spectacularly. purest swing baseball's ever seen. damn shame, i loved him in his seattle days. BTW, i don't think he'll be able to get there. he's had too many injuries too make believe he won't get injured again.
I personally wish for Griffey to succeed. He is the complete opposite of Bonds. However, I think talking about 700 is too early for him. Let's see how he finishes this year and how he does next year.
In your post, the verb "took" is misleading. Are you saying they CHOSE the road, or they unknowingly WENT that way? I don't think Griffey could help getting injured, and Bonds chose upgrading his body with enhancements that Griffey has not. Note I am not saying Griffey coulda shoulda or woulda, only that it's more obvious with Bonds. Griffey and Bonds, however, should not be in the same zip code or comparison charts... not from the same era.
Griffey Jr. has the prettiest swing I've ever seen. It's a shame his body started breaking down because he was on pace to be the best ever. I don't think he'll be able to do it and he'll probably end this season on the DL again.
If Griffey hadn't taken steroids so early on, his body wouldn't have broken down as it is now. Catch 22.
OKKKK. I dont thing griffey has ever been implicated in taking steroids. Are you just making that assumtion because his body is wearing down. I think the carpet in the Kingdome had much more to do with the current state of his body than anything. I do think He could make a run at 700 if, he switched over to left field or 1st base. I dont think his pride will let him do that. Then again he has been hurt just running the bases.
The Kid was absolutely awesome in the early 90's. One of my favorite players. Then stupid AJob had to come along and push him out of Seattle.
I still have those "Ken Griffey Jr. for President" stickers they used to give out at the Nike stores about 10 years ago.
He was on pace to break it in my eyes. If he had not gotten hurt all those years in a row he would have been the closest to breaking it behind bonds no doubt about that. Him and Bagwell were my favorite players back in the 90's and I still like the guy.
Even with all those injuries he is still 12th on the all time home run list (closing in on Mike Schmidt). I'm a big Reds fan and I don't think he has 700 left in him but his numbers already put him with the all-time greats. 600 home runs is certainly within reach and that puts him top 5 all time.
The only reason Griffey isn't implicated is because of his nice friendly guy commericals of the 90's. He definitely worked the media way better than Bonds.
