The Cat, intelligence and ignorance can go hand and hand. For instance, Sky Pilot gives some of the most thoughtful and articulate posts in defending baseless arguments. You start reading and agreeing with him/her because of his/her verbal eloquence and dancing-like debate skills, until you realize all the evidence points in another direction (SP-your verbal gifts are an admirable trait). It's funny, because I was really thinking of posting a new thread called "Ref-Laker-NBA Conspiracy Theory Finally Blown Up". I would outline how--Shaq was fouled out while going for a defense rebound when he had decent position, Rose holds Fox to get a freebie to give the Pacers a chance to win, take away the intentional fouls on Shaq and the Pacers got like 15 more free throws--basically the game was set up for the Pacers to win, yet they didn't. But then I realize with the conspiracy buffs it is like arguing someone on Martian visits in Roswell or arguing religious-grounded topics--as Sister Helen Prejine (Sp?) says (author of Dead Man Walking), you can find arguments justifying any of your positions in the bible if you look hard enough. ------------------ "The Rockets were ahead of the Suns by 20 late in game 2 of the series, but when the going got tough, we just Pippened . We would not be done in the series though."
First of all, I apologize to you guys for getting too involved in this last night. I personally do not know if there is a conpspiracy, and have never said that there is one. But anyway, officiating is a very judgmental thing. Some people think that there is a foul on a play, and some don't. Both can have valid arguments. Maybe you don't think that the 2nd quarter was terrible officiating, and that the Pacers got some breaks at the end of the game. And I respect your opinions about it. It's just not everyone is going to agree with you people about everything, and I'm sorry if it upsets you but I thought that the officiating last night was very poor. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong but that's my opinion, and if you guys have a right to share your opinion and not be personally attacked, then I believe I deserve the same. Just because my opinion differs from many doesn't mean I deserve this kind of treatment. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
That's cool Cat, I respect the contriteness in your last post. I might have piled on one too many as well with my last post --though intially I really wasn't going to slant my post to anyone specifically until I read the SAT-card stuff. It's all to be in fun, if it gets too personal it gets in the way of that. [This message has been edited by sir scarvajal (edited June 15, 2000).]
sir- same here! After the game, I was thinking, at last! I wonder what all the conspiracy theorists have to say about this one! Finally we had a game where the Pacers had every opportunity to win and both calls and non-calls going for them when it most mattered- the 4th and overtime. But sure enough, it didn't matter in the least. Usually you don't see this kind of blindness except in religious/political debates.
Nolen- FYI I am not a conspiracy theorist. I just thought the game was called poorly. Whether you believe it or not, it is possible for you to disagree with the officiating and not claim a conspiracy. Sir- I hope you understand why I mentioned the SAT stuff. If you had that kind of stuff on your resume (and maybe you have a lot more, just hypothetical here) and someone basically called you a dumbass, wouldn't you respond like that to show who you really are and that you aren't even close to being one? I'm sorry guys- it's just after all the hard work I've put into being such a good student and those accomplishments, I don't appreciate it when someone tries to talk negative about my intelligence. Hope you understand. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is. [This message has been edited by The Cat (edited June 15, 2000).]
Cat, You said that if someone insults your intelligence, you shove your accomplishments right down their throats. Now, isn't saying you have "all those accomplishments" and only being in high school the same as Shaq saying "I have won at every level except college and in the pros" without every doing anything in the NBA? And I also noticed that you spend alot of time here during the afternoon. Aren't you suppose to be in school? Or is school over? My little brother is still going to high school with a couple of weeks to go and I am wondering if you being here during the afternoon is kind of weird for someone in high school. ------------------ INDY IN 7!! The people and Nielsen want it!
If Shaq was in high school and said he had won at every level except for college and pro, it would make sense because he never had the chance. Same here. I'M NOT SAYING I'M BETTER THAN ANYONE!! Can't you see that? I'm just trying to show evidence that I am not stupid. I'm not trying to brag on myself or anything, I am simply trying to prove the point to Swopa that I am not stupid. I am not going to sit here and let someone ridicule me and not respond. By the way, school was out on May 25. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is. [This message has been edited by The Cat (edited June 15, 2000).]
And what the heck is your problem with me anyway? I am so sick of this. Someone (Swopa) who doesn't know anything about me criticizes my maturity and intelligence, and I simply try to show proof that those opinions are wrong. I'm sorry, but I'm not just going to sit here and let someone ridicule me. How am I the bad guy out of this? I do not understand. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
I don't have any problems with you, Kitty. You bring insightful and well-thoughtout posts to the BBSter. We actually have alot in common. For one, I believe wrestling is real. You believe the NBA is real. I hate the Lakers. So do you. I believe that Superman is not Shaq. You believe Shaq thinks hes Superman. And, you believe the Pacers were cheated. I believe the Pacers cheated themselves. So you see, I think your cool. Sometimes you do get a little too fired up. But that is ok. Not everyone can appreciate the work the NBA and NBC and the refs puts into making these playoffs so exciting. As you get older, you will see that its all about fun. ------------------ INDY IN 7!! The people and Nielsen want it!
Almu- that's cool. Like I said, it just seemed like you were making me out to be the bad guy here and that kind of ticked me off. Sorry for overreacting too much on your last comments. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
The answer to your question Cat is no, I don't. I think it is relatively pointless to bring up scores, salaries, degrees earned, classes taken, etc., to try to bolster one's points here. I have never brought my academic and professional record into play to try to gain legitimacy in the BBS. (Except I think one time in the “hangout” section where what I do was directly related to topic of discussion and I thought it would provide a little context for where I was coming from). In the BBS we are all equals (except the Admins ), and it up to us to gain respect by clearly articulating basketball and/or Rocket knowledge. Do not feel like you need to prove anything here other than with the pen--or the keyboard--in this instance. And if someone insults you the best way to address them is to make them look the fool by addressing their insults and faulty arguments--without showing they get to you (not being defensive). Don't get me wrong, you have taken more than your share of heat, but it comes with the territory for posting strong opinions. Try to learn to enjoy taking some heat now and then, that is part of the fun in all this and perhaps your rebuttals in the future will be sharper for it. [This message has been edited by sir scarvajal (edited June 15, 2000).]
Sir- that thing about the problem was addressed to Almu but thanks anyway for the advice. I agree with you that it is not good to bring up all those things here, and I would never have said it if not for continually being harrassed by Swopa. I know I shouldn't have done all of that, but I hope you can understand my reasoning behind doing it. It's times like this I wish ClutchCity had an ignore button where I wouldn't have to read any of Swopa's posts. But I know I have to, and will try to handle it differently in the future. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
Almu- dude, no matter how funny your last post was, you always keep outdoing yourself. Bravo. I want your updates on games 5-7 (if necessary.)
Nolen, thanks much. Can you tell that I live for the playoffs? Theatre at its best! ------------------ INDY IN 7!! The people and Nielsen want it!
Hey, but Almu . . . did you know that the Lakers played an out-of-town tryout for Game 4 last year against Golden State?? (relevant parallels and interesting notes in bold) [Note: I was at this game. The Warriors were up by 28 points before the Lakers started coming back. Pretty damn exciting, especially the tipped free throw.] ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited June 16, 2000).]
Swopa- you're talking to a guy with a 4.08 GPA in the top 3.5% of his high school class so why don't you shut your damn mouth. Everyone on this damn board misspells things, and I'm sorry I never make mistakes in typing like you because I'm sure you're perfect. I can find you about 50 people in the last few days who discussed the term asterick and misspelled it. You tell that to them too, because if you don't, then IMO you are the hypocrite too. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
Oh yeah, I remember that game. The Warriors completely choked, and Kobe was fantastic. I watched that one. Of course, that was when I could stand to watch the Lakers. (before they got Phil) Wasn't the score like 44-16 in the first half? And if I'm not mistaken, the Warriors were in the playoff race at that time too and that really pushed them back if I remember correctly. I stand corrected on my statement of Portland pulling the biggest choke of all time against LA. I forgot about that. ------------------ Cheaters never win. Unless you play for LA that is.
