So now I'm seeing ads all over for this stuff, has any body had it? What's the deal with it? Does it taste like tequila? They tout it as an "on the rocks" thing right? WTF is going on?
There is no difference between Cuervo, and Cuervo gold except added color. It is an alright cheap tequila, but there is much finer stuff out there. Maybe Cuervo black is some kind of premium tequila on par with some of the others.
I had a free sample at a liquor store a while back and its suppose to be a "sipping" tequila, premium...It was ok, but there are much better ones ought there...
if any of yall ever see me at a bar ordering a tequilla and coke, i give you full permission to punch me in the stomach.
If I am not mistaken, Gold is aged longer, and picks up the color of the oaken barrels. Also, I understand that Jose Cuervo is barely tequila, that it is a mixture of a vodka like alcohol and tequila, and is 51% Tequila to qualify. True tequilas are make from the Agave (sp?) plant and are much smoother. DD
Normally the gold tequilas are aged the same time as the silvers. They just add coloring to make it look like it's been aged longer. There is actually something called the Tequila Regulatory Council which requires any tequila to be 51% agave. They'll throw sugar or corn in there for the rest. The top tequilas are 100% agave. If y'all get the chance to go to Guadalajara sometime, take a sidetrip to the town of Tequila and tour the distillery and get the history lesson. Very fun.
I'm usually known for my outstanding Frozen Margaritas' but last weekend I forced by problems with the time/space continuum to use Cuevo's pre-mixed bottles........eeeew! so sweet.
yeah, super yuck. i was in LA last year and was asked to make margaritas at a party full of artists and architects from all over the map. they thought a texan should do the honors. hmmm, i don't even care for margaritas so i poured cuervo, some nasty pre-mix and ice into a blender and lo and behold, they all loved them. i do like tequila straight up, although it likes me not.
I tried it out. They are pitching it as sipping or mixing it with Coke. The lady at the store actually said it is more of a Rum-Tequla. I tried it with Coke and it was aight. Drinking it straight was not a good experience. Jose came out with some flavored tequilas also. There are three of them but I can only remember the Orange and Lime flavors. I took a shot of each and it was actually pretty good. It is Tequila, but the flavor definitely takes away alot of the bite that Tequila has. I liked it, but I guess for 'purists', it is not something they want. They are also marketing this as something you can mix. I tried the lime flavored with orange juice and it was pretty good. The prices of all the products described are way too high for what you are getting though.
oh, i know how to make a good one, i just wasn't inclined to do so. i like one every now and then, i just prefer a tequila with a beer chaser.
Yeah, I get the feeling they are trying the new "twist" since there are only, like, 4 ways to have tequila without it sucking.
For other tequilas that is pretty much correct. Cuervo Gold however is made exactly the same, and then colored to be gold.
The best tequila I have ever had is Cabo Wabo. Very smooth with little bite. Better than Tres Generaciones and Patron.
I love margaritas but a mexian martini hits the spot almost everytime. Trudy's in Austin (I think they have one in Houston) has the best IMO.
For the true Mexican martini experience (and the place that started the trend) you have to go to the Cedar Door here in Austin. Manufique ! DD
