There's some other stuff talked about in the interview including new accessories (HD DVD), possible pricing schemes, bigger HDDs, Square-Enix support, and more.

As long as Lego Star Wars becomes backwards compatible before Lego SW: II comes out, I'll be perfectly happy.

Well I'm keeping my Xbox anyways, mainly cause it's a Halo Limited Edition, but also cause half my games aren't and probably never will be compatible on the 360.

What BS!!! How can you say no one cares...I care...

I may be in the minority but that is a huge selling point...Hell, if Sony did this, there would be hell to pay....

This just cements I'll be waiting for PS3...It'll be next year when I get it, but I can wait...

So because you can't play certain games (every game in my collection sans Lego SW is BC) you're going to pay $200 more for a system? To play OLD games? Why don't you just keep your current systems if its THAT important to you?

One thing I noticed was that when I was looking to get the PS2 was that BC was a big deal but once I got a PS2, I NEVER played my old games on it. I never even touched my old games.

The same thing with the Xbox 360..I haven't tried or played any of my old xbox games on it

Yup. It was a selling point for me but I think on PS2 I might have started playing through PSX Metal Gear Solid exactly once....and lost interest halfway through.

On the 360 I'll still fire up the occasional Halo2 (which I prefer for multiplayer to Perfect Dark) maybe I'll play Winning 11 this week since there's no 360 version and the world cup is coming up. That's it.

I don't understand what the big deal about stopping Backward Compatibility Updates is either. All the major 'classic' games (Halo, Halo2, Ninja Gaiden) have been updated. Does anybody really need obscure, mostly mediocre games like Kung Fu Chaos to be updated so they can play them on the 360? Doubtful.

It is a non issue, they will stop at some point, they are making all the key ones backwards compatible, but why do all of them?

That or Tiger Wood, 2k sports whatever, Project Gotham Racing, etc...On the BC list is Barbie, freakin' Barbie...I have kids so having two systems that are compatible work for me, that is the real reason...

yeah some of the games on the list are really obscure, which makes me think that there are technical or licensign reasons why more popular games didnt make the cut.

Those games make no sense to make backwards compatible, they want you to buy new ones.

They're aint going to be a new NFL 2K or MVP Baseball anytime soon - that's the problem.

For whatever reason, a few random EA sports titles, like NBA Live 2004 and 2003, ARE backwards compatible, while others ain't.

Right, so MS should not spend any money to support a publisher that can not make those games again, yet they WILL support a publisher who is going to be making Madden etc for the 360.

exactly what i was going to post... the only game i need backward compatible is mvp baseball. it's such a shame that ea can't make mlb games anymore but hell i'd even play their college one if they made a 360 version.

That would make logical sense, but it's just so random they way they did it, e.g., you CAN'T get Take 2's discontinued NFL 2k series backwards compatible, but you CAN get Midway's discontinued NFL Blitz series backwards compatible.

And you can get the discontinued Akklaim All Star Baseball series BC, but you can't get a BC version of the take2 MLB2k series, which owns the license.

I don't know if it's strategic, seems to random.

While I wouldn't necessarily say Microsoft "over delivered" on BC, they did do a lot more than I thought they would do. I was honestly only expecting a few games, like maybe 15-20 tops. A lot of the best-known Xbox games are playable on the 360. However, they're still missing a lot of games that people seem to want*, including Shenmue 2, the Silent Hill games, Chronicles of Riddick, Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, the Burnout games, the Spiderman games, the X-men Legends games, Psychonauts, Phantom Dust, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, Conker, Mercenaries, Otogi, and one of the Brothers in Arms games IIRC. I think all of those are some of the better-rated games on the XBX (all 80%+, some 90+%), as well as decent sellers in most cases. It seems like maybe they should have done it all or not bothered trying I guess.

*Note that I'm not 100% sure if those games are BC or not. I just saw people online complaining about them, so I'm assuming they're not. Additionally, this would all be a moot point if all those games are included in a final big BC update.

Probably more like $100 than $200.

Personally, I like a console being BC, although it isn't that big of a deal. When I was still wanting to get a PS3 at launch, I was planning on playing FFXII on it as well as some of the other games still coming out on the PS2 in the next year or so (GoW 2, Yakuza, Okami, Disgaea 2, Persona 3, etc.). Plus, when something like Silent Hill 5, MGS4, Kingdom Hearts 3, God of War 3, etc., come out on the PS3, I might want to play some of the previous games to refresh my memory on the series. Not that I couldn't play the games on the PS2, but it is a hassle that I'd rather not have to deal with...not to mention I'm not sure how my PS2 will be holding up in the next 7 years or so; in Microsoft's case, it doesn't help that they're also trying to kill off the Xbox, making it a little more difficult to keep a Xbox around to play Xbox games.

Again, I'd rate other things as being more important than BC, but it is still a nice feature to have IMO.

I think it is the case that when they're trying to make one game BC, the process ends up making one or other games BC as well. For example, they didn't go out trying to make that Barbie game BC, but when making Splinter Cell and Ninja Gaiden BC, maybe they ended up being able to easily make the Barbie game BC as well.
