    NCAA baseball tournament field announced

The field of 64 teams competing for the 2006 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced Monday by the NCAA.

The national top eight seeds are Clemson (47-14), Rice (50-10), Texas (40-19), Alabama (41-19), Cal St. Fullerton (43-13), Nebraska (42-15), Georgia (41-19) and Georgia Tech (45-16).

The SEC leads all conferences in the number of teams in the championship field with eight, followed by the Atlantic Coast and Big 12 with seven each. The Pacific-10 and Conference USA have four teams each.

Twenty-nine of the 64 teams were not in the field last year, including Lehigh (automatic qualifier), UNC Asheville (automatic qualifier), Prairie View (automatic qualifier), San Francisco (at-large) and Sacred Heart (automatic qualifier), making the championship for the first time. Manhattan was last in the field in 1957, while St. Louis is in the field for the first time since 1966 and Ball State's last appearance was 1969.

Miami is in the field for the 34th consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida State is making its 29th straight appearance, second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks: Clemson (20), Cal St. Fullerton (15), Stanford (13) and Rice (12).

Of the 285 championship eligible Division I institutions which sponsor baseball, Rice has the most Division I wins with 49. Twenty-five other teams won at least 40 Division I contests and 24 are in the field.

Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from June 2 to June 5. The 60th College World Series begins play June 16, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

Here is the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament field.

    Or Omaha.

On Bowling for Soup goes to the Movies Album they have a song called Omaha Nebraska that is about going to the CWS. I'm gonna be using it as a bumper starting next week.

Of all the sports that Prarie View would be good at, baseball?!

I never would have figured, but it's good to see a local school like that get somewhere.

Go Coogs! I think I'll have to pick up MVP NCAA next year since they should be ranked high (hopefully). Shame they couldn't host a regional though.

UH will have to not only win the Norman regional, but also defeat the winner of the Rice regional (Rice, Arizona State, Baylor, Prairie View A&M) to advance to Omaha. They're going to have to have some guys in their bullpen step up if they're going to make a run. Aside from Brad Lincoln (who might be the top pick in the MLB draft next week...) and maybe Ricky Hargrove, UH is woefully short on pitching. They have some good sticks, though. Weston, Garcia and Lincoln are all threats at the plate.

Coogs and Nebraska both lose their first two games and have been eliminated.

#2 National Seed Rice Owls defeat Prairie View, will play winner of Az State and Baylor tomorrow

#3 UT-Austin loses to Stanford and will need to win its next three games to advance.

    Tough early exit for UH.

My Vanderbilt Commodores are losing to Georgia Tech right now.. but one our first game against Michigan...

Notre Dame has been eliminated after going on about how they should have been a host team.
