you know the color codes. I think the last time we saw a change was before the last presidential election. interesting. just wondering.

It still exists but a few years ago they decided to stop publicly announcing color code changes because the thing had become an object of ridicule and did more harm than good.

It still exists, but it is not needed anymore since Dubya is not up for election.

It's kind of unnerving, too, since I have no idea how panicked I'm supposed to be right now.

I think they revised it so that there isn't one universal coding system for the country. For example, Omaha might not necessarily need the same threat level as NYC or LA. So I think I heard that they apply threat levels to either a region/city and/or an vulnerability (like subways or ports) and only notify applicable security personel. This was due to cost. An elevated threat level in NYC resulted in paying overtime to police in, say, Omaha which is silly. It was costing local governments millions.

Besides, it basically was either yellow or orange permanantly. They should have just saved the paper/ink and not bothered to print blue or green.

Interesting, I didn't know the changing of colors had real effects in dollars. that's pretty good info. so when you say that the alert for ny may not necessarily for omaha, do ny residents still get warned, or is it just local law enforcement.

It's still around. I sometimes watch Foxnews just to laugh and every 5 mim or so they post that terror level. No other news that I have seen still does that. Surprise surprise.

I beleive it is mostly law enforcement or other relevant entities. As you know, since the whole thing turned into a joke I think they decided not to play it up in the media anymore. Afterall, W undermined the whole thing when he told us to go shopping when we were on yellow alert. :) So it is clearly more for officials than the public.

Take what I say with a grain of salt since I can't source any of this. I'm just recalling a news story I saw over a year ago.

This was the case in the midwest, last year. There was fear that terrorists were going to strike cattle, so airports (I know that Des Moines was, I assume others did as well) had a higher level of security than in other parts of the country.

The terror alert system lost its ability to scare people into voting GOP, so it has been deemphasized. :(

I think I saw a sign, "alert level orange" on Staten Island ferry in NYC last week. Not sure if that's the same color code.

I heard something similar in Alaska. That terrorists were creating a bear superbreed to unleash on the American population that would tear us all apart limb-by-limb. Fortunately, the minute-men of the north foiled their plot.
