Scientists and governments got together - understood the problem and took action to end the developing crisis.

It's working, which is exactly the reason we must curtail the release of greenhouse gasses now before it’s too late. The situations are very similar and should be handled accordingly.

Ozone Hole May Disappear by 2050

The ozone hole over the Antarctic is likely to begin contracting in the future and may disappear by 2050 because of a reduction in the release of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting gases, according to a team of Japanese scientists.

The findings are based on a series of numerical simulations carried out by Eiji Akiyoshi of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, near Tokyo, using projected emissions of chlorofluorocarbons and other gases blamed for the ozone hole.

According to a report posted Friday on the institute's Web site, the hole is at its largest now but is likely to gradually start contracting around 2020 and disappear by around 2050.

The team's findings are in line with research by other scientists.

Chlorofluorocarbon levels in the earth's atmosphere have been declining since the mid-1990s due to international efforts to reduce emissions.

It's all about identifying problems and taking early action.

The problem with the greenhouse gas debate is that there isn't a single smoking gun and most of the culprits are naturally occuring.

The CFC industry (mainly DuPont) profited from the Montreal Protocol when it announced a more expensive but earth friendly CFC alternative a little after the event. Not all industries are altruistic enough when the chemicals they make most likely damages the environment, but DuPont had a juicy incentive.

"It's [Global Warming] the only thing we face today that has the power to remove the preconditions of civilized society"
    __________

Clinton says must "get off our butts" to stop warming

"Climate change is more remote than terror but a more profound threat to the future of the children and the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren I hope all of you have," Clinton said.

"I think we should be in the Kyoto climate change system," Clinton said. "We can't solve global warming or any other problem in the world you can mention that amounts to a hill of beans by ourselves."

The United States is considered the largest emitter of the "greenhouse gases" blamed for global warming.

President George W. Bush has said that global warming may be occurring but its cause is not clear.
