Looks freaking great! http://www.dallasobserver.com/blogs/?p=613 May 16, 2006 Austin City Limits: You Read It Here First Filed under: Music Forget those rumor blogs posting their maybes and could-bes about who’s playing the fifth annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, which takes place September 15-17 at Zilker Park; we have the full list, from A (Alexi Murdoch) to Z (Buckwheat Zydeco). While some of the folks were confirmed long ago–Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Flaming Lips, Ben Harper and the the Innocent Criminals, Willie Nelson–there are plenty of surprises on the list, among them Van Morrison, Jack White’s new band the Raconteurs, hipster hip-hopsters Gnarls Barkley, Canadian bedroom-popsters Feist and Stars, Dallas ex-pats Secret Machines and Ben Kweller and the Rocket Summer and El Lay songstress Aimee Mann. They’re among the bigger names scheduled to play the fest, which hasn’t even made official this super-secret roster for which plenty of folks have been pining before deciding to make the trek from Dallas to Austin. So here’s what we know, which is plenty. Ain’t it always? In order of, well, importance (in my crowded head, anyway), here goes: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Massive Attack, String Cheese Incident, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, the Flaming Lips, Jose Gonzales, John Mayer, the Raconteurs, the Shins, Ween, Los Lonely Boys, Gnarls Barkley, Cat Power and the Memphis Rhythm Band, Secret Machines, Gomez, Kathleen Edwards, Wolf Parade, Jack Ingram, Sparklehorse, Thievery Corporation, Ben Kweller, G. Love and Special Sauce, Matisyahu, Damien Rice, Kings of Leon, Iron & Wine, Kasey Chambers, Aimee Mann, Nickel Creek, Damian Marley, Calexico, the New Pornographers, Son Volt, Guster, Galactic, KT Tunstall, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Centro-matic, Marah, Nada Surf, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness…, Okkervil River, the Black Angels, Explosions in the Sky, Sara Hickman, Trish Murphy, Asleep at the Wheel and about 50 others acts (among them the South Austin Jug Band and the Palm Elementary School Choir) who’re there to fill space and kill time while you’re reloading your one-hitter. –Robert Wilonsky Apparently the full lineup comes out tomorrow. At first glance, I'm already planning on seeing... Tom Petty Flaming Lips Van Morrison Son Volt The Shins Gomez Willie Nelson Galactic Damian Marley Centro-Matic String Cheese Incident The Raconteurs Calexico
I thought Thievery Corporation ceased to be when Pam Bricker committed suicide last year. I see they have a new remix album out, I'll have to check it out. String Cheese Incident is so great live.
Yes, you do. Buy your tix already, dude. Was hoping the Black Keys would make it back. Their show last year was crazy good.
one word: pumped! oh yeah, i just bought my tickets for the Black Crowes/Drive by Truckers/Robert Randolph shows in SA and Austin today!!! PUMPED!
The Black Angels' singer is a friend of mine. (he's orig from Seabrook) You should all check them out. They've been touring a ton lately. I'm excited that they are playing ACL. http://www.myspace.com/theblackangels
Awesome line up, but the overlap of bands during the day is what kills you. You want to see all these bad @ss groups, but then end up with conflicting times on the schedule. The lineup looks great, but I'm sitting this one out. You kids have fun in the sun, in beautiful, luscious Austin. I will say this, ACL knows how to put on a freakin' festival. Next to Coachella, this festival is down right bad @ss!
The really good news about this year is the condition of Zilker Park. They have made a huge effort to really get more grass down to combat the dust problem from last year. That's not to say that it won't still be dusty. There's nothing you can do about it when it doesn't rain for a month before the show. It should be a lot better, though. I've ordered my tickets (although I got screwed out of the early bird deal) and will make it 5 for 5. I'm really pumped and it's only May 17th.
I will be there this year, I was hoping Cold Play would come back for another round but I guess I'll have to catch them when the come to h-town.

string cheese incident is absolutely amazing. went to one in austin a couple years ago. fantastic. especially the stuff thats passed around...
i cant believe massive attack is playing! mezzanine is one of the greatest albums ever - this is not opinion, it is a stone cold fact. and it "only" took 5 years to get willie on the bill. i dont know that last years festival will ever be topped, but this one looks pretty damn good too.
Man, I saw them in Austin last year. They played with a some friends of ours, called Loxsly. They're another amazing act. The show was Loxsly, The Strange Boys, and the Black Angels. Probably the best 5 bucks I've ever spent for a show. The Shins are great live. I've never seen the Lips or Van Morrison, so I'll be sure to get tickets this year.
