Great news! I would be ok with 75 (70 is WAY too slow on those open roads) but 80 is ideal, IMO.

Texas could accelerate to 80 mph

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060517/ts_usatoday/texascouldaccelerateto80mph

The nation's top legal driving speed soon could rise to a long-forbidden 80 mph as Texas moves toward increasing the limit on parts of two interstate highways.

The proposed increase on Interstates 10 and 20 in West Texas is opposed by some national traffic safety advocates, who say speed contributes to many crashes.

"That's not good news for safety," says Richard Retting, senior transportation engineer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an industry group. "When states raise speed limits, they're trading lives for faster travel times."

But a study by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) found that 85% of drivers on the affected highways already drive 76-79 mph, says Carlos Lopez, the agency's traffic operations chief.

TxDOT has been studying the proposal since the Legislature last year authorized increasing the speed limit from 70 or 75 to 80 mph in 10 mostly rural counties.

The five-member Texas Transportation Commission, which has the final say, is expected to consider the proposal May 25, TxDOT spokesman Mike Cox says.

If it approves, the new speed limit would be posted within a week. "Our folks are working right now on fabricating signs," Lopez says.

The move comes amid soaring gas prices. The
Department of Energy says that gas mileage drops sharply at speeds over 60 mph, and that drivers can assume that each 5 mph over 60 is like paying an additional 20 cents per gallon of gas.

American drivers have not seen a "Speed Limit 80" sign in more than three decades. The Kansas Turnpike had an 80-mph limit beginning in 1956, and Nevada and Montana had no numeric limits on some rural highways at times in the past. In 1974, Congress instituted a national 55-mph limit, which it lifted in 1995. States now set speed limits, even on federal highways. Thirteen states in the West and Midwest have 75-mph limits.

Some Texas officials oppose higher limits. "If the speed limit is raised to 80, everybody is going to be doing 85 or 90," says Hudspeth County Judge Becky Dean-Walker, the top elected official in one county facing the move to 80. "That's just human nature."

I'm sure the folks who have to travel to El Paso are happy, but it's not going to make that much of an impact on most of the state...

this is great news! Glad that oil crisis is behind us.

(wasn't the 55 mph supposed to help mileage).

i think 80 is ideal in an open highway. i usually don't go any faster but if that's not fast enough for you, then you're just asking for an accident.

Until they make it 100 mph on 290 from Austin to Houston, I guess I'll still need my Valentine 1. :D

I keep my speedo between 80-100 when on the open highway under good conditions.

    No tickets?

At today's rates...it doesn't take many of them to change your ways.

It's crazy. I think the 80 is even going to extend out to here. Actually, it scares me. Most people mentally add 5 to whatever the speed limit is anyway, so we were already going 80 in the 75 zones. I don't know if I want to see everybody going 85.

Isn't the Autobahn in Europe a very safe roadway even with the 75-80 speed limits and in some places no speed limits?

More like 90mph, I add 10 mph. I drive fast until I get a ticket, then I slow down because I know I can't take defensive driving to get it off my record.

Jeeze you guys make me feel old......

I drive usually 5 over - no more when I make a trip out of town. I dont have $$ for a ticket, and I feel unsafe in my 4Runner going over 75mph. Plus the gas mileage does drop like they said and I dont have $$ for that either.....

I usually drive the speed limit when Im driving around Houston. All you have to do is listen to the traffic report to hear all the daily accidents that happen around town - I dont want to be a statistic......

My main concern would be for animals, especially at night, especially in West Texas. I haven't heard anythgn about I-10 out there specifically, but I know on some of the other roads out there there are lots of deer, birds, etc. crossing roads.

The birds thing sounds wierd, but last time I was out there on a back road (you know one of those 2 lanes - one each way - with speed limits of 70) at night birds literally seemed to keep flying at my car for who knows what reason.

It doesn't seem like 10 mph should make any difference, but what do they say about breaking...every 10 mph is another couple hundred feet or something ridiculous like that.
