Exactly! The HOF should also be full of players to remember, who made their names known through some great clutch moments
It is a "Hall of Fame" for the all time greats. Not a "Hall of really good" players. Sam has been good for a long time, but he is NOT great. Clutch - absolutely, Great enough to carry a team - NO ! By the way, the Clippers are running the old Houston Rockets offense from when Dream was around, it is awesome to watch. DD
Kevin Garnett or Yao or Tmac aren't good enough to carry a team either (by themselves). You say 28 pts 11 rebounds and 9 assists, plus the game deciding 3 pointer at the end during a must win playoff game doesn't deserve HOF consideration? oh only 1 turnover for a PG. people say Jason Kidd is deserves HOF, I say not even close. Those stats above are SAMs, but if it were Jason Kidd's, they'd say hall of fame performance etc. The problem with Sam is that he had success too early and that the team that won 2 rings got no respect to this day. Thats why people are calling the Rockets's SWEEP OF ORLANDO an upset. Thats why Sports Illustrated didnt initially print a cover for the Rockets beating the Knicks. Oh the SI guy came to Houston during the Astrodome celebration and apologized and we booed the living crap out of them. The thousands of Rockets fans canceling their SI subscription was one the greatest momments in Rockets history. Cassell deserves it. he doesnt show up highlight reels with Vince Carter, but he wins and he WON 2 already. taking the worst francise in sports and doing this is HOF material. look at the season. people think kidd was better than this guy? 1999-2000: Appeared in 81 games - all as a starter- and was the team leader in assists (9.0 apg, 2nd in NBA), second in steals (1.26 spg) and third in scoring (18.6 ppg), free throw percentage (.876, 9th in NBA) and minutes (35.8 mpg)…named NBA Player of the Week (11/2-7) after averaging 29.0 points and 9.0 assists while shooting a league-best 69.4 percent from the field – the first Bucks Player of the Week since the 1996-97 season…established career-highs in FGM (15) at Houston (11/2); steals (6) vs. Dallas (12/5); and assists (19) at Charlotte (12/29)…set season career-highs in games started, minutes played, field goals made and attempted, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, assists and points…established Bucks single season assist mark with 729…registered 18 assists without a turnover – two shy of an NBA record – vs. Atlanta (1/4)… recorded 27 double-doubles on the season (points/assists)…missed one game (1/6 at Detroit) with right ankle tendinitis. 2000 Playoffs: Averaged 15.8 points, a team-high 9.0 assists (2nd in NBA) and 3.4 rebounds in 35.6 minutes per game over five games…dished a Playoff career-high 13 assists in Game 4.
Tinman, ONE year does not equal the hall of fame, he would need to do it for 10+ years, Sam is a really good player, and is VERY clutch. But he is not Clyde Drexler, or MJ, or Barkley, or Dream's caliber. DD
he's had great years with the bucks, minessota, and now with the clips. he still has a good 2-3 years left in him. dont forget his post seasons.
I'll never get tired of championship references. Sam and Robert (Kenny too)are erasing that stigma that the Rockets won with only one player. http://thechronicleherald.ca/Sports/503872.html "I really enjoy the situation when it’s tight, because everyone is scared to make a mistake," he said. Cassell said he developed his cool under pressure routine his rookie season with Houston when the Rockets would start Kenny Smith at the point but typically call on him to finish games. "My job was to get the ball across court and make a play," Cassell said. "Not just bringing it up, give it to Clyde (Drexler) or Dream (Hakeem Olajuwon) and getting out of the way. "Those guys put a lot of pressure on me just making plays. I couldn’t use the ‘I’m a rookie.’ I couldn’t use that by January, February. "That’s how I gained the comfort zone." All while the Rockets won consecutive NBA itles.
if James worthy can make it, so can Sam Cassell. Worthy was a 'role' player with the Lakers. Calvin Murphy made it. Sam is just as good as Calvin. Sweet Jumper. Why not? Sam? Championships, check winning games, check stats, check longevity, check recogizable player, check heart, check
I would think that Sam goes down in the Danny Ainge mold after his career. Major component of two championship teams, integral part of a few squads that were strong, but not a HOFer. Same with Horry. Evan
Cassell has consistently been the #2 or #3 scoring option on all his teams. Horry wasn't. Horry just showed up once in awhile. Cassell brought it every night. Cassell is top #40 in assists ALL TIME. POINT GUARD HALL OF FAME STATS: Assists Rank 1998-NBA-#8 2000-NBA-#2 2001-NBA-#10 2004-NBA-#4 Career-#34 Assists Per Game 1998-NBA-#10 2000-NBA-#3 2001-NBA-#8 2004-NBA-#5 Career-#44 what does this guy have to do to get in the hall of fame? 110+ playoff games doesnt mean anything? top 10 in assists and top 20 in scoring doesn't mean anything? lead his team in the regular season to great records, win championships, hit game winning shots, have high scoring, high assists games. constantly outplaying 'better guards', steve nash, john stockton, penny hardaway, mike bibby, allen iverson, baron davis, andre miller, etc.. why is he so underrated? who do u want on the game on the line? Sam Cassell or Jason Kidd? A guy who CANT SHOOT or a guy who CAN SHOOT? Jason Kidd got a triple double in a loss, Sam got a near triple double in a win. they put SHAWN MARION ON HIM!! if you aren't a hall of famer, why would the other team put their BEST DEFENSIVE player on you? especially if you cant jump and out quick someone? must be because you have SKILL.
http://www.venturacountystar.com/vcs/sports_columnists/article/0,1375,VCS_225_4693516,00.html TNT's Charles Barkley — who made news last week when he admitted to a gambling habit that has cost him an estimated $10 million over the years — has made his share of Clippers jokes over the years just like the rest of us. But Wednesday night, he was impressed and said much of the team's success can be attributed to Sam Cassell. "When I saw the Clippers play (early in the season), I thought Elton Brand was fantastic and I love Chris Kaman," Barkley said, "but Sam brings something to the Clippers that Magic (Johnson) brought to the Lakers, (Larry) Bird brought to the Celtics and Michael Jordan brought the Bulls: a great player and a swagger; (he brings) the swagger to the Clippers."
i cant believe sam cassell was compared to that rat danny ainge....ridiculous....there's absolutely no comparison there
