http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/the_bonus/05/12/larry.hughes/index.html Take the time to read this...really a great story now that mother's day is coming up...
Great read, thanks for posting it. I think we all as fans tend to forget that these walking-banks are human beings, that they struggle with the same things we do everyday, get emotional, have families they care about, and go through some trying times just like we all do; having money doesn't make it any easier on you when a close one dies or is seriously ill. I didn't know much about Larry Hughes, but now that I read this piece, it gives me a new found respect for this kid. Great guy.
i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but his brother just died http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/14567409.htm
Really great story, albeit with tragic ending. Justin was lucky to have a brother like Larry, now one of my favorite players.
Larry Hughes went pro early so that he could help pay for his brothers medical bills. I was living in St. Louis when the decision was made. It was widely known in St. Louis why he was turning pro and I never ran across any naysayers even at SLU. I think a lot of the criticism of young players turning pro early is unjustified. Many are doing so to help their family escape poverty.
