Well that will be perfect timing then ...cause that's probably about when things will be done. Oh, and gas prices will be about $25 a gallon ...that is if we haven't gone Mad Max and resorted to lawless gas thievery by then.
completely agree. one of the first things that came to mind was the potential for a music festival or something of that nature, but having restaraunts does seem like they're trying to do too much in the space provided. i just don't think e restaraunt is neccessary. but this does look promising.
I once interviewed with Tapley Assoc. for a Landscape Architecture job. The guy aksed me what I thought of their design for Tranquility Park and I told him it was too much hardscape and too arty...needless to say I did not get the job. I would have designed something more like this, looks like a great plan for an urban respite. (now if they could just air condition it) Here's my slogan for the Houston Olympic bid: Sweatfest 2016 A restaurant will encourage daily usage as a lunchspot for downtown workers as well a generate some daily revenue. It will also be the refreshment stand for the outdoor events we all want..though we have the Party On The Plaza stage. I still think sitting on the lawn at the International fest for a couple of shows is the best time in Houston.
This space isn't big enough to support a big music festival. That is better suited for the park on the other side of downtown. This looks very cool.
Not sure I understand all the anti-restaurant sentiment. Don't you people like to eat? I mean, I can understand if there are going to be a bunch of Chinese buffets where you get arrested if you don't clean your plate, but....
I like eating, but when I think of a park - I think picnic. I dont know, Im sure it wont be as bad as Im envisioning. Again I think they are trying to please too many people with something that in my mind should be simplistic in design and function. Maybe thats because I lived in Austin for so long and their parks are so natural - This one seems really forced and somewhat garish if you will. Just typical Houston.... To me they are trying to squeeze EVERYTHING into a tiny space and then its sectioned off...... At least give me some frisbee golf - not a putting green - if you are going to do everything else. Keep it simple stupid.
Dude this thing is in the middle of downtown. It can't be on a scale of Hermann or Memorial. I personally think Hermann park is the best "city park" in the state, and the fact that it's in the middle of town right next to the med center is even more amazing. Hermann has an amphitheatre, the zoo, disc golf, 18 hole golf course, driving range, and a kick-azz statue of Sam Houston. It's also right on many bus routes and the death train's line.
Right, but at least they could keep it simple and have more open area..... Again Im just using my comparisons based off downtown parks in Austin (Zilker). I would love Herman even more if I could find a place to park on the weekend. Thats a wonderful park with all of the renovations - just gets really crowded.
I've been to Zilker park and it's not in downtown. This new park in Houston is going to be amidst skyscrapers. Zilker is on the other side of the river (or lake..or whatever that water is called) from Austin's "downtown". I don't know of any parks in downtown Austin to speak of. Not a fair comparison at all.
Sorry its across the street from downtown. I group Zilker in with Auditorium Shores, and Town Lake Park since they are so close to each other. FYI - Waterloo Park (holds concerts every summer) and Duncan park are both located in downtown Austin. Waterloo is alot smaller than the one being constructed in Houston, yet still holds big concerts.
I just think people are losing perspective with this park with the negativity. We're turning several ugly surface parking lots into a city park that has a ton of greenspace, an amphitheatre, a giant pond and a couple of restaurants and people find a way to b!tch about it. Go have your concerts at Hermann park, Jones square, the park along Allen Parkway or where they have the international festival. I for one am very pleased that we're getting rid of surface parking lots for something nice like a park. Expecting Zilker park (the dustbowl?) in the middle of downtown Houston is absurd.
Building a park in downtown Houston is always a good thing. btw- Zilker is only a dust bowl during record 110+ degree heat.
Fully agreed. We finally get some nice open ground in our concrete oasis and people are whining about no frisbee golf? They're building a giant pond in DOWNTOWN HOUSTON. When this thing is complete you can park out of the sun, take your family to the park for the day and then walk to an Astros game. But where will we cram in the whiteboy dub bands?! And what if we have to see homeless people?!
