Not only is it getting worse... but its coming at a time where the big-time markets aren't getting it done. I understand the 2004 Red Sox Championship bough them a ton of grace period time... but the Yankees have been THE story every single year of the decade, and they haven't won it all since 2000. Hell, they get more attention than the Cardinals (who have a huge following), and the Cardinals have outperformed them in every facet of competition (record-wise, and acheivement wise) since 2000. Everybody says its "good" for sports' popularity when the big-market/money teams win... but that's probably because 95% of the media attention is on them during the season, thus an unbiased fan will basically have no clue of who else there is in these sports.
In that spirit, I don't think we're that far away from ESPN creating its own network just to cover east-coast sports... ESPN "Big city" or some crap like that.
I'm back in town July 2nd. You better not be too cool to hang out now that you're all married. Wanna take in some games this summer? We need to get Max involved, I want to see him get heated I think it'd be entertaining. Buck can make some sarcastic remarks...
Since Houston controls all the oil and gas for the U.S. we should cut off their supply until they cover the Southern teams more.
Basically all ESPN covers is Lebron/Lakers/Yankees/Red sox. I stopped watching ESPN a while back. O yeah and Stuart Scott is full of ****.
Buster Olney is saying he thinks Houston will be the winner of this sweepstakes. He says Roger won't want to alienate either fan base in NY or BOS, and the only way to avoid it is to pitch for the Astros. I doubt that's as strong a consideration. i think the biggest considerations are: 1. ease/accessbility to home; 2. the fact he has a long-term agreement in place to work for the 'stros. he doesnt want to make McLane or the Astros look bad in all of this...and if he goes elsewhere, it would certainly create that perception (as we've seen from a few on this board already); 3. the astros look really good.
oh yeah...it's classic. those guys don't think anyone makes a decision to do anything without considering boston or ny.
I wonder how long we are going to have to sit and wait for a decision. Can you imagine being at MMP for his first start? It will (would) be nuts!
what we offered is more than fair. i wish he would just go ahead a take it to put everyone at ease. it irritates me to think that he's holding out just in case a better offer comes along. just sign the damn contract roger.
ESPN sets the sports agenda in the USA. Sad reality. We need sports broadcasting competition. Desperately. Seriously. VERY DESPERATELY. The Steinbrenkees outperformed the Cards and everyone else in -- salaries paid. They pay more lux tax than the median payroll in MLB! The Bosox' greatest appeal is to be the foil for the Evil Empire. (I believe Olney is correct that Roger returns to MMP - or Katy, and I have posted so earlier. I also believe if RC does re-up with The Good Guys then the Astros have national relevance -- at least until the next NYY - BRS meeting.) Bron is 'so today' and TMac is 'so yesterday'. So sez ESPN. And so on and so forth, scooby dooby doo.
Someone on that Cold Pizza show was talking about Roger is now delaying the opening of his restaurant and friends say he is going to wait until he can see how races are more.. the usual stuff I suppose
I would imagine that it's always been the Astros and that Roger and Drayton have an under the table agreement.Clemens is in a position where he doesn't really want to go anywhere else, maximizing his career and his time at home.Clemens isn't going to travel to road games he's not pitching...It's going to be as cozy as possible. 18 million prorated....and worth every penny. I wish Backe good health, but if there was any doubt at all, that injury guarranteed Rocket's return.(perhaps for even more jack)
I think Clemens is being an absolute jerk. His agent says "he will make his decision before June 15." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/04/sports/baseball/04pins.html?_r=1&oref=slogin I know the Astros have to play whether he comes or not, but this whole episode hangs over them even though they won't admit it. Supposedly Clemens will be a "bonus"; I sure hope so.
http://blogs.chron.com/sportsjustice/archives/2006/05/20_million_for.html Justice's blog says that the Astros offered $20 million to Roger for 5 months of playing time. Damn impressive offer.
